Elector candidates may be nominated by petition in Louisiana

Louisiana law allows presidential elector candidates to be nominated by petitions signed by at least 1000 qualified voters in three distinct ways. If a party central committee declines to endorse national nominees, electors pledged to those nominees may appear on the ballot via petition with the party name and emblem restricted. The 1948 example used Truman Barkley with a donkey emblem. The law also requires official and petition columns on the ballot and allows one candidate to withdraw from the petition column. A second path permits any group to nominate electors with at least 1000 signatures.
