Bell Labs develops a pushbutton telephone to supplant rotary dials. Transistors enable feasible pushbutton calling. Engineers design central office equipment to read button tones. Users press buttons to place calls and hear dual musical tones signaling the switch. This creates a new language of dialing for faster nationwide switching.
An array of electronic equipment creates a Translator to adapt central offices for bilingual operation. Researchers test which pushbutton layouts suit users best, aiming to machine the human factor by matching button arrangements and feel to diverse users. Laboratory tests show strong interest in a single-division pushbutton design.
Senator Stuart Symington of Missouri told Abbeville listeners at the Annual Dairy Festival that the federal budget can be balanced by cutting waste and investing in public works. He cited a $1.2 billion reduction in the administration’s request and argued that day to day administration and defense and space programs contain excess, urging long term savings to balance the budget.

The issue priced around 102.5 and matures October 1, 1961.
The Ark La Tex Sportsman's Association plans its annual Bird Dog Field Trials November 13 to 15 across the region. Association President Dr WT Glenn announced the event, featuring five stake competitions including shooting dogs and puppy trials as participants are invited to join.
Edward C. Cardon, superintendent of the Alexander State Forest at Woodworth, was named chair of the Pulpwind Logging Committee within the Pulp and Paper Section of the National Safety Council at the 47th National Safety Congress in Chicago. Cardon, a longtime Louisiana forestry official, is known for safety work and forestry leadership.
