Morrison Promises Full Pay Scale For Teachers And To Keep Taxes Low
Gubernatorial candidate Chep Morrison told the Louisiana Teachers' Association in Baton Rouge that a 1960 budget with the full 1958 teacher pay raise will go to the Legislature for approval after election. He pledged to champion teachers before the Legislature, oppose using teachers as political pawns, and keep taxes low to attract industry. He cited the nine point program but urged no further dedication of state funds and declined to commit to removing school millage from the ten year tax exemption. Morrison argued balanced state spending requires restraint and warned that removing school taxes could undermine the exemption's appeal to industry. He stressed experience in attracting business and said keeping taxes low is the best way to boost revenues.
