Louisiana Tech hosts its annual two week Summer Music Camp from July 6 to 17 with registration urged before June 1. Residents pay 40 for room board and infirmary while non residents are 20. prices rise 4 after June 1. Camp offers graded hands on piano organ voice choir and glee and nightly recreation with dorm housing and meals provided.
Louisiana's Home Demonstration Club sponsors extended stays for foreign home economists. Miss Anne Hyrve of Norway visits Louisiana for a year, touring LSU and institutions, visiting homes, and sharing life in Louisiana, while locals learn about Norway.
Practical advice on lice control for beef cattle using treated sacks and chemicals, plus a report on a large crowd at the Rayigond farm cattle event in Colorado and prize winners in weight guessing. Lamb and sheep sales plans across Mississippi cities, and notes on wool quality, pasture clipping, and summer camp attendance trends.
Life Scout Jimmy Rogers 13, son of Mr and Mrs Jake Rogers of Dubach, received the God and Country Award at First Baptist Church of Dubach in a formal ceremony. Br Gray Allison officiated with Troop 49 present in uniform. Bruce Waller led a prayer. Paul Bonin Jr led the pledge.
At a Legion post business meeting Commander Veazey announced committee assignments. Dick Hudson leads Boys and Girls State, Larry Fox handles school awards, Hunter Lewis will coordinate VEW flag placement on Memorial Day graves, Iddie McLane heads junior baseball, Carter Fox and Calvin join the State Convention Committee, and Bill Veazey chairs. De Witt McFarland, William’s brother after whom the post is named, altered the post meeting. Resolutions urged every qualified voter to exercise franchise rights. The June 4 meeting will host a joint Legion and Auxiliary gathering with a covered dish supper.
The parish invites about eight additional youths to join a weeklong junior camp experience. If you have never attended a 4-11 camp, this week promises fun and learning opportunities for young participants.
Congressman Passman of Monroe announces he will not enter Louisiana’s gubernatorial race. He cites 13 years in Congress and seniority on Appropriations as essential to safeguard constitutional government and states’ rights during the current period. He plans to continue duties in Congress and thanks constituents for their support.
Hugh Jacks of Ruston placed second in Louisiana Jaycees Sneak Up contest and was elected regional vice-president at a New Orleans convention. He will serve Region Two covering several parishes in north central Louisiana. Sam Thomas of Quitman was elected National Director at the same meeting.

Forest fire fighting units led by Ranger Frank Gibson received a thorough 100 point maintenance inspection at Alexander State Forest near Alexandria. Officials noted emphasis on cleanliness and appearance to reduce wildfire risk, with drivers given psychophysical exams to ensure operator fitness. Equipment operators included Frank L. Sibson, WH By Wilson, and Frank Andrews.
Students at Hubert Belisle arranged an Industrial Arts Show in Rus ton high school lobby during school hours on Wednesday May 20. Displayed were works in woodwork metal work feathercraft and mechanical drawing with a curved saddle by James McCullen taking first at the State Craftsman Fair in Natchitoches. Other top picks included a hunting knife by Thomas Driskill a handbag by Chuck Anderson and a woodturned lamp by Randy Tobin among over a hundred items.
A United States Air Force pilot from the Strategic Air Command is slated to join Southern Bell in February 1959. The Southern Bell training program will acquaint new management personnel with all phases of telephone operations to give them a better understanding of business challenges and leadership requirements.
The Simsboro Garden Club met Thursday May 4 in the school lunchroom for its regular session. Hostesses included Mrs Homer Best and Mrs Cole with club president Mrs C G Cole presiding. Hort iculture tips covered transplanting and pruning as the group prepared flower arranging displays. Refreshments followed for several members.
A letter from former Ruston resident Jim Wells notes his move with family to 713 Eureka Drive North Hollywood California. The Wellses include son Jim Sr an engineer with Trughes Aircraft awaiting a June masters degree. son Jerry an accountant at Richfield Oil Co and night law student. daughter Charlotte a college junior active in drama. daughter Candy age twelve in junior high. and Cindy seven. Mr Wells retired from practice due to health and writes a medical column for a San Fernando Valley newspaper. After a meeting, members toured the garden of Mrs. G E Pankey of Ruston.
Mrs. G. I. Pankey hosted a luncheon May 13 at Lincoln Courts Restaurant honoring her daughter in law Mrs. George A. Pankey. Guests included Mrs. S. B. Pittman and several Louisiana residents. The party toured Mrs. Pankey's garden before plans to travel to Mexico and back to Ruston. The last note recalls Mona Lisa theft and recovery years earlier.
A group of baton twirlers will be showcased on KNOE TV Happiness Exchange in Monroe on Saturday May 23 from 10 30 to 11 30 a.m. Betty Choate and Jackie Trouel perform a cowboy act titled Randy. Barbara and Lynn Davis dance baton routine to Topsy. directed by Mrs Virginia Cortes.
At the Sit Kat Klub May 11 meeting new officers for summer and fall were elected. President Kay DeFreese leads a slate with Elaine Barnes as vice president Sandra Moore as secretary Mary Ellen Blackwall as treasurer Sharon Moore Ann Temple as sergeants at arms and Mary Esther Lewis as reporter historian. Also noted are nurses per population figures in the United States with 268 per 100 000 now versus 259 in 1956 and 251 per 100 000 in 1914.
