Can You Encourage A Coward By Running When He Runs
Robert Quillen argues sympathy weakens character and fosters self-pity. The article warns that accepting pity invites more sorrow and excuses, hindering resilience. It suggests overcoming pity through hard experiences and self-discipline to strengthen courage.
The Cost of Sympathy in Strength and Courage
The passage argues that self pity and sympathy undermine resolve, noting that destitute survivors once proud can become shameless after aid. It warns that supporting emotions should be felt not spoken, as sympathy acts like a drug weakening the needy and inviting further weakness. A drowning man needs strength, not companionship with another weakness.
