Relief Bills Move Through Washington Committees
In Washington on January 27 relief legislation stacked up in house committees as leaders push to advance aid measures. The appropriations panel debated the Senate plan to grant the Red Cross 25 million for food distribution while agriculture eyed diverting 20 million bushels of farm board wheat to the needy. A 95 million revolving loan fund for drainage and irrigation districts won early action pleas, and federal land banks argued for mortgage extensions to farmers in troubled areas. Senator Black condemned Red Cross aid delays, while Surgeon General Cumming warned that malnutrition threats could trigger more disease than the current acute crisis. Maj. Gen. Lytle Brown projected 45,000 men employed by March 1 under 22.5 million river and harbor flood control funding.
