A city in Alaska reports its water system vanished on Christmas night creating a birdhole in a reservoir floor. Officials declare a state of emergency and urge residents to boil water from emergency reserves for safety.
Vernon reports a festive holiday season with extended family visits across many households. The Holstead and Pennell families hosted relatives from Shreveport Lafayette Jackson Baton Rouge West Monroe and Freeport along with friends, sharing meals and Christmas celebrations through Christmas Day and beyond.
Rev and Mrs Charles Wallace of Dothan Alabama served as visiting pastors at New Hope. Wallace spoke at both Sunday services while the community enjoyed a quiet Christmas. Families joined relatives from Baton Rouge Delhi Shreveport Monroe Ruston and other nearby towns for holiday gatherings and meals.
A list of families and guests visiting for holiday dinners over the weekend includes Melton and family of Sterlington Valine and family of Monroe Prentice and family of Teston Alton and Mary of Ruston Clinton of Chicago Mrs Griffin and Mary Beth with Mrs Griffis sister Mrs EB Tatum of Ruston Rey and Mrs Charles Wallace. Mr and Mrs Hammon hosts for Sunday dinner with guests Mrs O Griffin. At MR Whatley home holiday visitors include Mrs Edla Roscer daughter Carolyn and granddaughter Rhonda of Shreveport Mrs Ruth Robinson of Ruston Ardis Whatley of Alexandela and Mrs Bessie Fletcher.
Quitman notes report Mrs Arlo Head hosted the Adult Sunday School class on December 21 at her home. Guests included W W Barber F D Waldrip R T Norman Gordon Carr C B Waldrip Rev Robert Galatas Ruth Ann Dora Thomas H C Moonce Maurine Carr and others. Mrs. W A Brewster notes Christmas dinners in Cedarton area as Walter Wilson and Ruston families gather with grandchildren and a great grandchild. Attendees include W T Howard family, W L Wilson of New Hope, Daltote Willison of Minerva Springs, Loyd Walker and Gary, Robert Olwell Lud, Garland Parley of Monroe, Billie Ray Cassie and daughters, Will Younce and daughter, plus N F Brewster family. Also mentions Chase and relatives visiting, overseas service in Germany, and birthdays.
Mrs. F. T. Singleton hosts and lists numerous relatives visiting or staying during Christmas. Visitors include Pete Singleton and family, Herman Cobb and family, J. F. Doss and family from Dallas, and Arcadia acquaintances. Several other family members enjoyed meals and overnight stays around the holiday.
Christmas passed peacefully in Culbertson with family visits and greetings. Loyd Wilson worked while others shared time with relatives including H B Brewster, the Shields family, Brewster kin, the Harmense and Brewster households, and Dub Brewster preparing his store after moving.
PFC Gerald Ball and Mrs J R Wad Aven of Ruston Louisiana joined 8 participants with the 9th Infantry in long combat proficiency tests near Fairbanks Alaska. The rugged tests measured unit effectiveness under harsh snow conditions at Blossom Air Force Base Alaska. Wall, assigned to Company B, arrived in Alaska January after entering the Army in June 1958 and attending Ruston High School. 3D Armored Division Germany. PFC John GWelph, son of Mr and Mrs Robert Welch of Bernice Louisiana, recently earned a high school equivalency while serving with the Armored Division in Germany. Welch, a wheel mechanic with 11 Troop B, 12th Cavalry, completed education via the US Armed Forces Institute development program. He entered the Army in June 1958, trained at Fort Hood Texas, and arrived overseas after training.
