Drownings Mark Frenzied Calcutta Kumbh Mela Rite
At the Kumbh Mela near Allahabad more than 3,000,000 bathed at Sangam the junction of the Jamuna and Ganges amid extreme Hindu fervor. Nine pilgrims drowned as yogis endured feats of endurance while barbers and hair cutting surged. Hindu belief links hair offerings to rebirth release, with widespread shaving among pilgrims and selective hair retention by those with living fathers or husbands.
