New Orleans March 4 American Red Cross official said relief work in Louisiana parishes is closed as conditions improve and federal funding aids farmers. Cash grants totaled 840501 in 31 parishes while 61047 families were aided at the peak. The organization will still help families needing government assistance. Vicksburg Mississippi reports the destruction by fire of Brierfield, the 164% built plantation once owned by Jefferson Davis. The 2380 acre estate, near Palmyra Island land 30 miles north of Vicksburg, has long history tied to the Confederacy with Joe Davis as initial donor and O D Gatewood as longtime keeper. The house where Davis fell ill and left for New Orleans burned last Friday. the Joe Davis mansion was burned in 1913 and is buried nearby on the island.
