Canada urged to diversify farming away from wheat amid subsidies
Federal Natural Resources Minister Ralph Goodale told Canadian farmers to diversify beyond wheat as Europe and the United States still subsidize exports. He noted Canada has spent over $32 billion on passive income support since 1985, but grain and oilseed producers struggle to compete. He urged shifts toward livestock and specialty crops and advocated ethanol plants, looser Wheat Board controls, and local pasta production to capture higher value.
