CITT urged limits on offshore beef imports to protect Manitoba cattle
The Canadian International Trade Tribunal recommended restricting offshore beef imports to 7,000 tonnes before tariffs under GATT to shield cattle producers. MCPA President Dale Smith says imports rose 47 percent year over year with 1998 seeing record levels, threatening stable markets and costing Manitoba ranchers millions. The group represents over 12,000 ranchers and feeders.

CGC deregulates elevation tariffs at West Coast and Thunder Bay
