Brightside C of C Meeting Details and Slides

A brief Chamber of Commerce gathering is planned at Brightside with a social time to close. The meeting will feature slides from the goodwill tour along Highway No. 62 taken in April and highlight local beauty spots of the province.

Protest Meeting Over Dam Friday

Farmers in the Assiniboine Valley north of the proposed dam have formed the Assiniboine Valley Farmers organization and call a Friday meeting in Russell Memorial hall at 3 30 p m with Mayor Henderson Portage la Prairie president of the Assiniboine River Control association as main speaker about 56 farms would be flooded if the dam proceeds. The meeting is open to the public though only those vitally interested may participate.

Band-O Beach Fest at Silver Beach for Elks July 1

Russell Elks host a July 1 celebration at Silver Beach featuring a ten game Band-O event to benefit the Russell Band. Activities include water sports, boat races, swimming races, greased pole walking, canoe boxing, tug of war, water skiing, a fish derby, and kiddie boat rides. Committees organize events with Boy Scouts providing hot water for picnics. Memorial Rink shuttles offer transport to Silver Beach before 11 am for those without transport.

Bus Car Collision Sends Three to Sacred Heart Hospital

Three residents of the Sreden Burg district were admitted to Sacred Heart hospital Saturday night after a head on crash between their car and a bus near Woodstock School.

Blood donor clinic eyed for Russell August eleventh

Russell Red Cross plans a blood donor clinic in Russell Memorial Hall on Thursday August 11. Councillors pledge rural support for finances and the blood clinic, with canvassing open until June 30. Dr J H More stresses plasma importance and local blood reserves. Water safety school may be held at Silver Beach the third week in August awaiting interest.

Rural Council Meeting approves bridge culvert project

The Rural Municipality of Russell held its regular session led by Reeve Jas Rea with full council. They approved a 28 by 7 by 5 ft Arch culvert for the Cracknell bridge at an estimated $1125, sought inter municipal grants with Shellmouth, awarded a gravel contract to T L Selby for $3884, and adopted the revised electors roll after a noon court of revision.

Pritchard Golden Anniversary Celebrated at Silverton

Mr and Mrs Pritchard marked their 50 years of marriage at the Cochrane home in Silverton on Saturday June 18 with around 200 guests. He came from London in 1903 and they farmed near Silver Creek before moving to Silverton in 1942. Rev S Vincent gave the toast, relatives sent telegrams from Hong Kong England and Gold Lake, and a three tiered cake centered the table as guests shared memories from 1908.

Krowski to Compete at Dominion Field Meet

Stan Krowski, Manitoba star distance runner, will join the Manitoba team for the Dominion junior track championships in Saskatoon on July 4 and 5. He aims for the one mile and three mile events with best times of 4:40 and 16:15. Travel support comes from the Student Council, Athletic Council and Elks Lodge.

Game and Fish Plan Picnic At Silver Beach

The Russell Game and Fish Association nearly canceled its semi annual meeting last Thursday evening. Twenty four members attended and laid plans for summer activities. The first event is the annual picnic at Silver Beach on July 17 with the entertainment committee in charge. An August 7 tentative date for the annual fish derby is set, but the location is not yet finalized.

Russell Adopts Waterworks Start as Dominion Hire Arrives

Dominion Construction equipment arrived in Russell on Monday signaling the start of the town waterworks project with heavy machinery expected along CNR lines. The E J Casey Show drew a family crowd on Shell River Avenue despite poor weather, raising 45 dollars for the Russell Band Fund. The Elks plan a July 1 Silver Beach celebration to boost funds for band equipment.

Russell School Closing Day Exercises Invitees

Parents and friends are invited to the Russell school closing day exercises Tuesday at 3 o clock. Class book prizes will be presented during the event. Barber Union Plan Seeks Wages Talk During Shaves

Mr Ernest Herbert of CIO Barb ers and Beauty Culturists of America urged at an Atlantic City convention that barbers drop weather and sports chatter and instead push official union views on wages and conditions while customers with lathered faces are in a receptive mood. He said recumbent clients with razors nearby offer a unique chance to argue for the Guaranteed Annual Wage and other aims, noting barbers who follow this would likely have few customers.

Leaders Engaged For Boys and Girls Camps at Silver Beach

The Kiwanis Club secured Mrs. W. McNaughton to lead the girls camp in the second July week at Silver Beach. Twenty two girls have registered for the week. George Laycock leaves the boys camp for cadet camp. Garfield Wilder will lead with aid from a Red Cross swimming instructor. Mrs. Kosteski of Rossburn will cook for the two weeks, promising wholesome meals.

John Joseph Betz aged 63 died Sunday at Concordia hospital Winnipeg Funeral service to be held today Thursday in Langenburg Betz was born in Langenburg and for many years served as secretary treasurer of the municipality.
