Russell Agricultural Fair and Races Set This Weekend
The 1989 Russell Fair and Race Meet opens Friday night with a Lighting Horse Show at 7:30 p.m. The downtown parade runs Saturday noon to 1 p.m. North of Masonic Hall. Catle judging, displays, and the Major Pratt Shop showcase follow. The seventh annual mini derby offers top prize of 90 dollars, Powder Puff prize 50 dollars. The Fun Rodeo presents 8 11 year olds and 12 15 year olds winners with 15 dollar prizes. younger ages receive silver dollar and ribbons. Lights Horse Show at 9 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday. Harness races Saturday 5 p.m. and Sunday 2 p.m. Eight heats daily with pari mutuel betting. Slow Pitch tournament begins Friday night, no entry fee, top prize 100 dollars. Saturn Show Midway operates both days with rides and games. RCMP trailer and Baldwin Organ and Piano trailer from Brandon. Beer gardens open with Moonshiner wine sponsors. Chemicals worth $13,000 recovered in Russell area
In mid May and June, farm chemicals valued at about $13,000 stolen from Regina were recovered on two Russell area farms during joint searches with Brandon GIS. The owners are not implicated. Rural Construction Wages Set with Region Variations
The Rural Construction Wages Board approved new minimum rates effective June 1 198. Rates vary by area from Brandon and Portage la Prairie at 5.45 to 13.80 per hour with plumbers and steamfitters highest. The Pas and north of the 49th parallel range 8.25 to 14.00 per hour.
