A former Russell resident, Percy Ward also known as Jack Temple, was laid to rest in Winnipeg last week with full military honors. He enlisted with the First Canadian Mounted Rifles at the outbreak of the Great War and served in France as a batman to Lieut. Lewis, a former manager of the Union Bank at Russell. His brother Sidney Temple also lived in the district for some time.
The Knox United Church Board of Session held two meetings on Sunday afternoon. Lorne Carter chaired. J. McKinnon was named chairman and Lawrence Bennett secretary. New pew members A. Henderson and Lome Carter were appointed to the board amid other roster details.
Foxwarren curlers proved too strong for the four rinks from Russell at their own ice, wiping out the deficit on games played in Russell and taking a joint lead. Return games were played at Foxwarren last Thursday night with scores listed. Lois Cochrane spent the weekend with Nettle and Myra Anderson in Russe, visiting Harvey Crerar’s family. Harvey Crerar married in January at Clandeboye to Miss Sutherland. they flew north of God's Lake for a mining job. Fay Johnstone learned of his sister Mrs. Erwin Comeau’s death in Aurora, Illinois on February 1. Endcliffe AR notes Highfield spent last week in Russell. The hockey bars were defeated at Shellmouth, the Shellmouth team winning 64 to nothing. The bonspiel started Feb with ten rinks entered. The Ladies Social Society met Thursday at Mrs. T Simms.
A whist drive and dance at Bavelaw School last Friday drew a very poor crowd. First prize for couples went to Mr and Mrs Jim Firth. Consolation prizes went to Doris Richardson for ladies and Thorson Ness for gentlemen. Proceeds benefited improvements.
