Roundabout reports progress this week with a new industry and plans for a library building. Local officials and Library Study Club members credited for effort, while state leaders praised for supporting Hogg State Park replica funding. Lions Club rodeo success and community pride highlighted. roundabout journal notes friendly rivals and civic spirit.
Rep Wright Patman announces Farm and Home Administration approved a $54950 loan to Salem Water Supply Corporation of Cherokee County to develop a water distribution system serving 51 families near Rusk. President is Mrs J W Thompson Route One Rusk.
The Texas Legislature approved 40 000 for a replica of the Jim Hogg home to boost Rusk as a regional tourist site. The structure on Jim Hogg State Park property will exceed two thousand square feet, furnished with antique pieces in Governor Hogg's era, and funds become available after September 1 1967.
The 19th annual Rush Lions Club rodeo in Rusk drew thousands despite rain. Organizer Lion von Doenhoff praised the event and promised a bigger 20th anniversary with improved contracts and publicity. Local acts included Nat Stucky and the Eagiettes Rusk High drill team, plus Sheriff’s pony prize to Clifford Harris.
The Rusk Chamber of Commerce launches a three team drive with Red White and Blue squads meeting at the Rusk Hotel. New members earn 100 points, dues increases five points, drive ends June 14 with a steak dinner for the winning team.
Rusk library committee approved the proposed design and floor plan for a new library. City Councilman J P Acker chairs the committee with members including Mrs W H Hanna and Mrs A S Moore. Cal Mac Engineer firm attended the May 24 meeting in the County Court room.
Jr. League action begins at Lions Club ball park with the Cardinals beating the Braves 8 to 7 in the opening game while the Yankees defeat the Red Sox 6 to 1. Future games include Cardinals hosting Red Sox and Indians hosting Yankees as Burnell Stovall Park hosts the series. Genn Stanley chairs the baseball committee. Separate report notes Rusk State Hospital employees receive pay raises up to 30 percent under the Texas Legislature.
At the June meeting the board discussed HEW guidance on faculty and student integration for 1967 68. HEW indicated faculty compliance satisfactory but student numbers insufficient. Eighteen Negro students planned to attend white schools next year, yet HEW questioned progress. President Ed Dickey led the session. a HEW visit may follow.
Rusk High School Eagles placed four players on the District 17 AA first team. Glenn Hassel pitched, Mike Birdwellinfield, Dickey Tisday first base, Steve Crysop outfield. Livingston added three names. Crockett and Woodville contributed others.
