Cherokee County to Vote on Tax Reallocation Tuesday

District Clerk A C Jenkins lists seven cases pending this week including a $100,000 damages claim from a highway crash in the Dew v Safety Convey Co suit filed August 13 1953. Other cases filed August 5 8 12 include several divorces and a damages suit in Burnis Stanley v Carl Waldman settled August 13 1953 for 150 dollars plus costs.

Citizens Bank Opening and County Tax Reallocation Vote

Citizens Bank expresses thanks for hometown praise after opening in Rusk. A special election set for Tuesday August 18 called by County Judge J W Summers to re allocate Cherokee County taxes. Voters will decide shifting general fund from 25 to 47 cents while jury and permanent improvement funds adjust to 3 and 15 cents respectively. Road and bridge funds unchanged.

The Rusk Kiwanis Club gathered at Smiths Cafe for a Tuesday meeting. Gerald Chapman superintendent of schools spoke on The Story of a Great Need in a Great Community of a Great State in a Great Democracy. Local leaders and visitors from Palestine and Maydelle attended and new member C J Hagler was inducted.

Swink Named Outstanding In All-Star Game Thriller

James Swink of Rusk High School starved the spotlight in Houston as the South edged the North 54 to 53. Swink scored the go ahead free throw and layup in the final minutes while receiving 13 votes from sports writers for the MVP honor. Ellis Olmstead of Galveston helped lead the South’s rally from a 46 46 tie to victory and Delbert Shofner of the North finished second with 4 votes.

Final Rites For Mrs Lula Milstead Held At Reklaw

Funeral services were held for Lula Florence Milstead 61 of Reklaw at the First Methodist Church. Interment was at Oak Flats cemetery. Survived by three daughters Inez Knight Imogene Jacobs Irene Cook. four sons H D Milstead Delbert E Milstead Robert Horace Billie M Milstead. two sisters and twelve grandchildren plus five great grandchildren. Reverends Curtis and McIntyre officiated. pallbearers listed. Wallace Funeral Home handled arrangements.

County Clerk Records Show Few DWI Trials This Week

County Clerk records indicate low trial activity with August 1 noting Snyder Frank Edwards as guilty of Driving While Intoxicated and fined $100 plus costs. Jack Curtis Smith also found guilty of DWI with a $100 fine and costs. Edward Ava Tuell remains untried, listed on the August 3 record.

Jewel Parker And Mother Injured In Car Crash

Jewel C Parker of Rusk and his mother Mrs Mattie Parker were injured when their car collided head on with a Chrysler sedan driven by Vernon Y Cheek of Beaumont on highway 69 south of Alto. Mrs Parker suffered severe injuries and was hospitalized. the Cheek baby had a head cut needing stitches.

Son Of Rusk Lady Escapes In Boat Blast Sunday

A 48 year old Houston contractor escaped injury but lost his 30 foot cabin cruiser when the craft Viking II blew up and burned offshore five miles from the Gulf while contractor O H Slayden his son L O Slayden 23 and employee Moose Stewart were on a fishing trip. O H Slayden is the son of Mrs O B Slayden of this city. He said they were not hurt but had a narrow escape after talking with his son.

Local contractor to return to Austin this weekend

Mr and Mrs Jim McCulluk plan to move back to Austin this weekend. McCulluk served as the contractor on Memorial Hospital and the F and M Bank and also did work on the Rusk State Hospital.

Lions Club Rodeo in Rusk hailed as best yet

The 5th Annual Rusk Lions Club Rodeo drew praise as the biggest show to date with gate receipts up about 5 percent and concessions up nearly 20 percent. Rodeo producer Bob Estes brought top stock and top cowboys as Lions and Lioness Club members coordinated a record effort.

Wesley Foundation minister to fill pulpit in Nacogdoches

The Rev. Dan Bynum of Wesley Foundation Stephen F. Austin College Nacogdoches Texas will fill the pulpit of First Methodist Church for both services August 16. He is a graduate of SMU and Perkins School of Theology. He formerly served as pastor of Alto Circuit. Lester Goff will preside at the morning services and D M Walker at the evening services.

The Cherokee Riders will perform the first night of the Longview Rodeo on August 18, as announced by Leon Pledger president of the organization. The renowned Texas act remains in demand for rodeos and horse shows and recently thrilled audiences at the Rush Lions Club 5th annual rodeo with their square dance on horseback routines.
