Inez Leaves Haiti Hoard of Death and Destruction

AP reports Hurricane Inez battered Cuba and threatened Haiti with a potential great tragedy in the Valley of Death. Death toll tallies at 88 in Cuba and 55 in the Dominican Republic while Guadeloupe reports 33 fatalities. Forecasters warned of floods as Inez neared the Bahamas, with Florida prospects uncertain but favorable.

Eastern New Mexico State Fair Schedule

Eastern New Mexico state fair events listed include Junior Livestock Sale at 5 a.m. Saturday with horse show halter and western classes, Southeast New Mexico Rio Growers Association Sale, Parade of Champions, and Championship Rodeo until midnight. Sunday features horse show English and performance classes, full fair rodeo, Carnival hours 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and check-out at 6 p.m.

Junior Livestock Sale Opens at New Mexico State Fair

The Eastern champion blue ribbon sheep leads a day of junior livestock events at the New Mexico State Fair. Calves pigs and rabbits appear in the schedule with a 7 am chicken breakfast and Wool Style Shows at 2 4 7 and 8 pm in the home arts building. Ram Sale starts at 1 pm with Packers bids announced by Glover's Packing Co Swift and Co. offers include 25 75 for lambs and 25 for calves and pigs.

Oklahoma dog named Best of Show at Rio Pecos Kennel Club

Debonair Dandy an English springer spaniel owned by Vivian Diffendaffer of Oklahoma City was named Best of Show at the Rio Pecos Kennel Club show drawing over 400 entries. Group winners include a German shorthaired pointer aweimaraner baset hound and doberman pinscher among others. The Junior Livestock Show features 31 calves two pigs and more with auction by Roswell Chamber of Commerce. Buyers get a check for the packer price and gate passes at the sale.

Roosevelt County swept the fat lamb show at the Eastern New Mexico State Fair in Portales with Grand Champion Hampshire Ronnie Caviness. Pam Green of Hagerman won Reserve Champion Mutton Breeds White Face and led in multiple divisions. other top placers include Vicki Watson, Tim Kunkel, and Charles Bennett among Chaves and Roosevelt competitors.

Mitchell Roswell Druggist Robert W. Mitchell Dies

Robert W. Mitchell 77 owner of Mitchell's Pharmacy Roswell died at St. Mary's Hospital after an illness. Born November 11 1888 in Kosciusko Mississippi he moved to Roswell in 1931 from Pampa Texas. He married Louise Coe in 1912. Survived by wife son Robert W. Mitchell Jr two grandsons one brother and four sisters. Funeral Saturday at Ballard Chapel with burial at South Park Cemetery.
