Walker AFB SAC Bombing Contest Promises Strong Show

Col Gerry L McKay and Col R H Worrell Jr led a Walker AFB party as crews eyed the 11th annual SAC event near Fairchild AFB. Airmen hailed the "Sir Pride of Roswell" RB 52 bomber and prepared for a multi night fly competition featuring 35 B 52s two B 58s and three RAF Vulcans with Crew S 01 led by Capt Donald Wilson from Brownsburg Indiana to earn the trip.

Shoot to Kill Orders Go Out in San Francisco Riot Zone

Police and National Guardsmen, armed with shoot to kill orders, maintained control in San Francisco’s Negro districts after a fatal police shooting sparked days of unrest. Maj. Gen. Teith said the key test is a quiet night, while Lt. Col. Smith warned guardsmen to shoot if attacked. Mayor Shelley and Gov. Brown declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew as 1,200 guardsmen patrolled streets.

Kerr Ranch Purchase Approved by Roswell City Council

The Roswell City Council voted to buy the L. D. Kerr Ranch south of Walker Air Force Base pending a closing date agreement. The option covers 285 acres of water rights and 3,000 acres of land, with a $30,000 down payment. purchase price expected over $300,000 for a new consolidated city water field.

Apollo Mission Second Crew Selected For Lunar Aim

NASA announced the selection of three astronauts for the second Apollo mission. Command pilot Walter M. Schirra Jr. senior pilot Donn F. Eisele and pilot R. Walter Cunningham will fly a up to 14 day Earth orbit mission next spring. Schirra, 43, is the oldest spaceman and previously flew Mercury and Gemini missions. Cunningham and Eisele joined the astronaut corps in 1963 and had not yet been assigned to a prime flight.

Training for 35 at RCC approved under Manpower Act

Roswell Community College will offer a 49 week electronics mechanics training for 35 unemployed persons under a Manpower Development and Training Act program approved by Labor and HEW. The New Mexico delegation announced the initiative with training allowances. The federal government will cover 120 414 of the 134 814 total cost.

Fort Sumner Rider Tops Calf Roping at ENM State Fair Rodeo

Mack Weston of Fort Sumner won calf roping with 11.5 seconds on opening night at the Eastern New Mexico State Fair. Ronnie Lemond of Lovington led bareback riding with 49 points, John Gass of Lubbock rode saddle bronc for 51, Gary Lynch of Roswell won bulldogging at 6.7, and Kathy Greenwood of Carlsbad posted 17.6 in girls barrel racing. Mexican aid train reaches El Paso for Tarahumara relief

In El Paso, authorities confirmed a relief shipment of 10 boxcars from Lafitte Louisiana donors for destitute Tarahumara in Chihuahua. Argentina Vows Trial For Airliner Hijackers

President Juan Carlos Ongania said those behind the hijacking of a 48 passenger airliner and its forced landing in the Falkland Islands will stand trial. The act, called a serious uprising, was described as piracy by Britain. The DC4 and passengers remained on the short Falkland racetrack with a wheel stuck as takeoff appeared unsafe.
