Roswell endures its greatest flood as the Hondo overflows, submerging Main Street and delaying trains. Businesses seal doors and residents move to higher ground while relief sluices drain water. the city takes an enforced holiday as homes, stables, and stores suffer extensive damage and a fire alarm sounds.
A circulating report says rain fell in torrents last night at the Diamond A ranch from seven to twelve o'clock. If true, a larger flood is expected tonight from six to twelve. The Diamond A is twenty miles by road from the city but one hundred miles by the Hondo course.
Reports on the street hint at a higher river rise tonight but experts and James Sutherland of the Diamond A ranch say no such reports have come. Authorities expect water levels to hold and fall through the night.
Jerry Simpson returned from Illinois with W. EB Thompson of Thom son & Cook Lakewood. Simpson forms a partnership to run immigration trains independent of the valley. The first train from Galesburg is planned next Thursday as offices open in Kirkwood Monmouth and Galesburg. Simpson made several speeches in Illinois and was well received.
Banks in the town are closed today with virtually no business transacted. Only rubber goods remain available and supply was exhausted early in the morning.
There will be no electric lights tonight due to the engine house being submerged. If another rise occurs, lights are promised for tomorrow night.
