Teenagers charged in brutal Pittsburgh murder case

Two Pittsburgh youths aged 18 and 16 are charged with murder in the death of 52 year old David Jenkins a janitor killed after refusing to give up a cigarette Four other boys aged 14 to 17 are held as witnesses and on assault charges Detctives say a barber Frank Stevens was attacked and Jenkins was beaten then kicked to death in the street

Break-ins and assault reported in city over weekend

Break-ins were reported at Whicker Furniture Co and Palace Transfer and Storage Co with cash, lamps, tires, wheels, and 25 gallons of gasoline taken. A rock was thrown at Chuck Sawey Gulf Service Station but entry was not gained. Emile Robles said three men knocked him down, stole his billfold, and detectives found soap bar evidence suggesting a soap-bar blackjack. Police investigated further as more thefts and bike thefts were noted.

Sleep and Speed Listed as Causes Of Two Road Deaths

Two weekend highway deaths blamed on sleep and speed. James David Pavik 30 of Deming died on State Road 11 after a tire blowout while speeding. passenger Clifton McDonald injured. Roy Homer Hendley 28 of Mountainair died after allegedly falling asleep on State Road 42 near Murphy. Mollie Murphy 52 of Wade died in a separate U.S. 385 crash while injured earlier. Total NM highway deaths reach 285 for the year.

Prowling Leads to $100 Fine in Police Court Night

Police Court workloads for Monday night show 11 cases and $210 in fines. The largest penalty was $100 for prowling, with $50 for petit larceny and $15 for fighting. Eight defendants faced intoxication charges, two posted $15 bonds, and six paid $45 in fines.

Texico Farwell Postoffice Consolidation Abandoned

Gov. Edwin L. Mechem announced the proposed consolidation of Texico and Farwell post offices has been abandoned after considerable citizen protests from both communities.

Airman Injured in Two-Car Wreck East of Roswell

A 21 year old Airman Donald Eugene Haskins of Walker AFB sustained abrasions after a sideswipe collision at 7 a.m. on U S Highway 380 fourteen miles east of Roswell. His 1953 Chevrolet sedan collided with a 1952 Chevrolet seismic truck driven by Charles D. Templeton 31 of Roswell. Haskins was treated at a hospital after a Westrum ambulance transport and the crash was investigated by I W Bud South NM Police.

Artesia report shows North Eddy county gins running around the clock as harvest begins with an estimated 41 000 bales. Through Friday 1 903 bales had been ginned, 204 fewer than last year’s pace due to a cold, windy spring. Farmers gin leads with 609 bales, while Cottonwood 478, Atoka 424, Espuela 207, and Mill 185. Artesia gin not operating this year, Artesia Alfalfa Growers expected to process.

Three divorce suits were filed in District Court. A decree was issued in Lillian Opail Rowe versus Virgil S. Rowe. A cause was dismissed without prejudice in Booker T.
