Government cost of living index climbs to 115 of the 1947-49 base pushing a 3 cent hourly wage rise for 1.3 million rail workers effective Oct 1. The gain lifts railroad payroll costs by about 100 million dollars. The index increase stems from higher food and rent costs and a New York transit fare rise.
In Roswell preparations loom for a public open house at City Hall honoring the 50th birthday of the city since its 1903 incorporation. Mayor Warren R. Cobean invites all residents to attend the 3 to 5 p.m. celebration with punch and cake and guests including seven former mayors.
In Vancouver sixteen more Doukhobors were found guilty in three minute trials for nude parading as a protest against government authority. The trials left 58 women still to be tried and sentences had not been announced. The maximum penalty is three years in prison.
Readings show three hour intervals with highs 88 and 84 and lows 59 and 56. Precipitation shows trace for year to date 9. Sunrise at 5 47 and length of day about 12.1 hours. Forecast calls for mostly cloudy today and warmer tomorrow with highs near 84.
Albuquerque paid quiet tribute to Ellis Hall, his wife, two daughters, and 17 year old Patrick Hibben at memorial services. The five died August 17 after a return flight from Annette Island Alaska to Albuquerque. Their plane was torn apart by cross winds near takeoff. The bodies were found after a month of wilderness search. The family aided the Lovelace Foundation with about 80 000 dollars for a radium cancer treatment project.
Dick Haymes and Rita Hayworth obtain a marriage license in Las Vegas at 3 p.m. Pacific daylight time. They plan to wed the next day at 11 a.m. at the Sands Hotel. Both have prior marriages, with Haymes recently divorced from Nora Eddington Flynn Haymes.
In the 1952 New Mexico senatorial election inquiry the Senate elections committee agreed to provide $1250 monthly for legal aid to both sides. Ehrlich, representing the Democratic minority, said private attorneys have not yet been paid. The end of work was announced, with questions over authority to pay and lack of central directive.
Lula Wheeler, a west Roswell poultry raiser, pleads for emergency feed under drought provisions. She argues no feed is available for her chickens despite assurances at the PMA office, noting topsoil loss and inability to grow feed. She tries to file for 100 pounds of corn and 100 pounds of oats, listing a yearling and a horse in the animal section.
In Wyandot County Jail 19 year old Roy Roger Schinagle Jr. Mayfield Heights is accused of murdering his teenage college sweetheart Cynthia Pfeil of White Plains. He allegedly confessed to a brutal crime that spanned central Ohio, detailing 17 gashes with a lead pipe and a strangling act. Schinagle signed a nine page typed confession.
Three youths in a 1949 Oldsmobile robbed two Elida service stations after midnight taking small change. Floyd Vaughn reported the car to Elida police after it paid 2 in coins for gas, then fled toward Clovis. Authorities connect the vehicle to a stolen car in Albuquerque and a theft from another station. a roadblock failed and the chase continues with Texas police alerted.
President Eisenhower will hold another stag dinner at the White House with twenty three business and government leaders invited. The gathering ties to the Crusade for Freedom run by the American Heritage Foundation which promotes citizen participation and anti communist broadcasts abroad. The president returns from a six week Colorado vacation and has a morning meeting with the National Committee for United Nations Day and a session of the Committee on Employment of the Physically Handicapped before lunch.
Dr You Chan Yang of South Korea arrived from Washington to confer with President Syngman Rhee on a diplomatic matter. The discussions aim to ease tensions and coordinate policy between Seoul and Washington.
Don Shultz of the local New Mexico Police unit escorted a parole violator to the state penitentiary in Santa Fe today.
Thompson heads the New Mexico Sheriffs and Police Association as officers are elected for the coming year. The group discussed state and federal law changes for Indian land jurisdiction, better law enforcement staffing, and distribution aligned with population. They endorsed a two term exemption and a tighter traffic code, plus closer NM border cooperation. Truth or Consequences will host next year’s convention.
Secretary of Agriculture Benson promises cooperation in an intensified federal state search for underground water in New Mexico and other Southwest states. He backs inventories and long term development and notes cooperation with Interior Department and state agencies to extend drought relief into lasting programs.
Queen contestant Miss Irene Gilliland of Roswell competes among seven girls for the sheriff’s posse rodeo queen title. The winner will reign at the Eastern New Mexico State Fair, Oct. 6-10. Gilliland, 17, an RHS senior, is president of the County 4-H Club Council and a FHA member active in livestock projects and 4-H. She is sponsored by El Rancho Motel and Owen Bros. Shoe Shop.
Police Chief Tommy Thompson reported a burglary at Esquire Cleaners 1015 S Main St where David Martinez 19 was caught inside at 244 am with 19 pairs of trousers 13 shirts 63 cents and one tie found on him Entrance gained through a window. Earlier a Sinclair service station at 19th and Main reported a break-in by breaking a rear window with $10 taken.
American League games featured Phillies 19 to 39 over New York in a 9th inning finish. Cleveland defeated Chicago 8 to 3 with Lemon Hegan Rogovin Dorish pitching and Wilison Lollar contributing key plays.
Chief Counsel Wellford Ware of the Senate subcommittee probing New Mexico's senatorial election is subpoenaed to appear before the Eddy County grand jury at Carlsbad. The investigation concerns Patrick Hurley's charges of irregularities in Sen. Dennis Chavez's reelection and reports of 1952 election ballots en route to Washington.
