Solsbery vacancy fuels Chandler improper handling claims

Jackson Chandler of Roswell, a defeated candidate in the June Democratic primary, accuses the Chaves County Democratic Party Central Committee of improper action in filling the vacancy left by Dean Solsbery. He says he was not consulted and only learned of Clayton Stallings as nominee through the press. County chairwoman Pauline Mann cited lack of details and declined further comment.

Democratic nominees chosen after primary in Roswell

After a Democratic meeting in Roswell the committee nominated Stallings by acclamation to fill the post left by Solsberg who resigned for health reasons. Chandler expressed disappointment that the people’s vote was not fully considered though he thanked supporters and noted a strong slate for the general election. Garcia declined the nomination for personal reasons and urged committee action.

BEF OKs Pay Raise For Higher Education Staff

The Board of Educational Finance approved a 12 percent across the board pay raise for faculty and professional staff for the 1975 fiscal year and a 14 percent raise for non professional staff. Final budget decisions rest with the legislature. The BEF also discussed a funding formula and approved a $3.5 million plan to add to UNM football and basketball facilities, expecting $456,000 annual income from the improvements.

Boyce orchard expansion in Carrizozo plants 1400 apples

Carrizozo residents Arnold and Dorotha Boyce, Ohio transplants, completed planting 1400 apple trees mainly Golden Delicious. Six-year-old trees yield first fruits as they expand to two orchards 600 and 700 trees strong with rows 15 to 20 feet apart.

Mrs. Boyce and Ralph Dunlap discuss orchard trials to supplement income after retirement. The couple, new to farming, used books and local apple growers for guidance, noting they have few losses and plan to plant nine more acres if needed.
