County opposes recreational marijuana and mulls regulation

Chaves County commissioners approved a resolution opposing recreational marijuana and discussed limits on regulating marijuana dispensaries. They noted state efforts to decriminalize and referenced battles in Santa Fe and Bernalillo counties over ballot questions for November.

Roswell Airport to Get 6.6 Million in Funding

U S Senators Udall and Heinrich announced a 14 million dollar set of federal grants for New Mexico air transportation. Roswell International Airport will receive 6.6 million to rehabilitate a runway, with funding also going to Alamogordo Albuquerque Lea County Questa and the New Mexico Department of Transportation for repairs extensions emissions reductions and planning.

WIPP cleanup plans await approval after leak

Carlsbad officials say the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant recovery plan is under review in Washington. The plan would outline cost estimates and a timeline for cleaning radiological contamination and resuming operations after a February leak that sickened 22 workers. Reopening could take up to three years.

Poverty rises in New Mexico amid Census findings

Census figures show 21.9 percent of New Mexico residents living in poverty in 2013, about 22,000 more people than 2012, keeping the state with the second highest poverty rate. National rate was 15.8 percent. Local leaders urge bolder policies like early childhood programs to address hunger and stress. Median income rose slightly to 43,872 from 43,423, while the state has the nation’s highest Hispanic share at 47 percent.

United Way funds the Working Mothers Day Nursery at 500 E Bland St and a Roswell center to provide pre school care and after school programs in nine elementary schools.
