Roswell’s chief urges the city council to seek federal funds to purchase motorcycles for officers amid local security enhancements and patrol improvements.
Ex Afghan president Nur Mohammad Taraki was killed by rightist raiders during a Revolutionary Council meeting in Kabul. Hafizullah Amin, American educated premier, is expected to assume power as Taraki had resigned for health reasons. Rebels report heavy casualties in the attack and say they hold sources inside Afghanistan.
Glover Inc a Roswell meat packer and processor reports a three month loss of 1 660 000 ending July 28 1979 up from 1 234 000 the prior year. Factors include weak live cattle and beef markets idle assets and underutilized processed meats capacity plus fixed cost absorption issues. The Hernando Mississippi plant will close Sept 14 as part of a drive to improve operations and a sale is being pursued.
Roswell again ranks low in New Mexico federal recreation funding for 1979 with a $25,600 award for a tennis complex at Goddard High School. Las Cruces leads with $139,000. Carlsbad $100,000. Hobbs $35,000. Officials cite limited matching funds and conservative proposals as key factors.
Porfirio Mendoza 21 suffered minor injuries after a fight with the victim’s husband at the Chaves County Courthouse. Police and sheriff deputies broke up the 9 am incident. Mendoza was treated and released at St. Mary’s Hospital. Investigation continues.
