Mexico celebrates Independence Day with grand parade

Mexico displayed military might in a two hour Independence Day parade in Mexico City. Spectators lined Paseo de la Reforma to witness army units, air force formations and machete militia troops. President Lopez Portillo spoke from the Zocalo balcony as fireworks filled the sky.

Kennedy leads Carter in New York and New Hampshire polls

Federal push to force states on 55 mph limit and fuel savings

The administration urged Congress to pressure states to enforce the 55 mph speed limit to save gasoline. NHTSA chief Joan Claybrook said a delicate balance is needed to gain driver acceptance, noting five states Texas Indiana Missouri New Mexico and Wyoming risk reduced federal highway funds for missing 30 percent compliance by year end.
