In Knoxville Tennessee Mrs Chester Massey found her cat Massie inside the clothes dryer after a phone rang nearby. She heard a strange clattering and opened the door to discover the cat spinning with towels. The feline recovered after about five minutes and survived the scare.
Thousands of flu cases surge across three states with many children affected. Mississippi reports 24 000 cases and 12 counties near epidemic status. New York Oswego County Hastings and Niagara Falls cite school closures and high pupil illness as authorities monitor Asian flu. Texas towns from Conroe to Dallas report rising absenteeism and campus health measures as cases spread.
Pleas of guilty were entered by Orlando M. Montoya and Paul D. Ellington. Each received 60 days in jail after petit larceny charges in a hearing before U S Commissioner R Perry Bean. The theft involved an RCA Victor television taken on August 23 from the 509th ARS at Walker Air Force Base.
Raton La Mesa Park owners announce a 6 percent annual dividend paid immediately, bringing total distributions to 69 percent over 12 years. The Northeast New Mexico Fair Assn, operator of the home owned track, notes dividends have ranged from 5 to 10 percent.
The Teresa Aldinger Fund opened at Roswell State Bank grows as local schools and community members add donations to help five year old Teresa who is scheduled for surgery in Baltimore on September 27. The fund will cover travel and medical costs with additional fundraisers planned if needed.
Glenn E. Snow assistant secretary for lay relations for the National Education Association will address Roswell Education Association members today at 6 30 p m after a dinner at the South Junior High School cafeteria. Snow coordinates NEA lay groups and committees and moved to NEA in 1950 from Dixie Junior College Utah where he served as president. He holds degrees from the University of Utah and has done graduate work there.
Roswell High School students faced a small classroom blaze when phosphorus used for a biology demonstration ignited after exposure to air. Principal Robert H. Nelson said severe damage was avoided as students used extinguishers. instructor Miss Ruth Napper received minor burns to a hand.
Mr. X told a State Senate Interim Committee on Narcotics of his daughter’s seven years as a heroin and alcohol addict. He recalled her first drug use at 16 after a party, an interracial marriage, a child, and repeated family disruptions. She is jailed for narcotics possession.
GRAND JUNCTION Colo Plans for a sixth uranium mill in New Mexico have been disclosed by the Atomic Energy Commission. The AEC said it contracted to buy uranium concentrate from Phillips Petroleum Corp from a mill in the Ambrosia Lake district near Grants. The mill will have a daily capacity of 1 725 tons, cost about 12 million dollars, with construction to begin immediately and finish around mid 1958.
Tropical storm Esther moves north from the Gulf of Mexico with warnings from Louisiana to Mississippi coastlines. Heavy rainfall and strong winds hit the Mississippi Delta with over 3 inches in six hours and gusts up to 60 mph along coastal areas. Elsewhere a cold front drives gusty winds in the Pacific Northwest with blowing dust and snow in Montana.
An Air Force veteran turned charter pilot fought off a passenger who assaulted him midflight over Long Island. The jet landed at North Fork Country Club after a 3,000 foot high drama. Miller, an ad salesman from New Rochelle, was charged with felonious assault and sent to Central Islip State Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
Washington reports 1957 net farm income could rise by about half a billion dollars from 1956, driven mainly by soil bank payments totaling around 738 million dollars this year. Prices are up about 3 percent, but farm operating costs also rise, with 1956 net farm income averaging 2 432 dollars per farm versus 2 277 in 1955.
