Ohio senator faces questions about a paid attorney working for an oil trust years ago. The matter centers on potential conflicts and the influence of the attorney on policy decisions.
In Cincinnati on September 18 Senator Foraker releases a statement denying that his past legal work for Standard Oil influenced Congress matters. He says he was paid for its Ohio affairs and that engagement ended before his Senate term. Archbold and others at Standard Oil offer no comment. Columbus records fail to show Foraker appearing for the company.
An old advert announces Dr Presley offering eye ear nose and throat care with glasses fitted and a contact phone number 124. The brevity suggests a small community newspaper classified item.
Active construction surrounds the Gilkeson Hotel and Elk building as crews rush to finish the Elk lodge by October. Yard work advances with grass sown and blooming plots at the Gilkeson. Dr Rathbun’s new office between the hotel and Presbyterian church takes shape and church grounds are plowed for beautification. Richardson and Second streets area shows ongoing improvements.
R F Cruse promotes an auto for hire claiming reliable service and reasonable prices. He asserts the vehicle does not break down and advertises dependable transport.
A large delegation from the Chaves County Sheep Breeders and Wool Growers Association will travel by automobile to Hope in Eddy County on Saturday September 26 to organize local sheepmen there. Officers urge Roswell members to attend in force.
The steamship Colon limped into Colon Panama after a hurricane struck Sunday. The vessel was battered and three crewmen died while repairing a water tank in the hold. The ship flew a half mast flag and displayed distress signals as local harbor authorities assisted.
The body of Charles G. Van Vieck a former Colorado supreme court judge was found in a Los Angeles lodging house. He had moved from Colorado six years earlier and left a wife and son in San Jacinto. A letter from his wife begging for money surfaced and he later bought cyanide with 25 cents and killed himself.
The American Atlantic fleet under Rear Admiral Sperry left Albany at 5 PM for Manila, 3600 miles away, with arrival due October 2 or 3. The flagship Connecticut did not depart with the rest due to coal issues but will set sail at midnight to catch up.
A Roswell cadet mass meeting formed the N M M S Athletic Association for 1908 1909 with officers elected Cadet Senior Captain Dow president and E C Houghton vice president The executive board includes Col J W Willson and Capt J B Webster among others Baseball practices daily aiming for the Albuquerque college tournament and a Christmas El Paso trip for A M College Las Cruces football and a possible game with the University of New Mexico in Roswell late November.
Taft will speak at the Water Ways convention at 11 a.m. then take a train to Galesburg to address the Lincoln-Douglas Centennial at 5 p.m. before returning to Chicago for the banquet, after cancelling the initial Chicago speech.
Seven persons, including prominent Roswell citizens, were arrested today for failing to cut weeds as ordered by Sanitary Officer M. W. Witt. Prosections for violation of the sanitary ordinance will not be overlooked. all violators will be punished.
Wateringbury England September 18 The body of Major general Charles Edward Laurd was found near a railroad crossing after being struck by a train. His wife had been murdered August 24 in Seven Oaks woods with rings stolen. The general committed suicide after receiving letters accusing him of his wife’s murder.
Two burglars broke into Samuel L. Clemens Mark Twain's residence in Redding Connecticut last night and were captured on a New Haven railroad train near Bethel after a violent struggle in which Deputy Sheriff Banks was wounded in the leg. The group is believed to be professional thieves from New York targeting the Twain villa.
The Republican state convention in Helena adjourned after two days with Edward Donlan of Missoula county named as governor nominee. The rest of the ticket was completed by renominating all current state officials except W. E. Allen who was not renominated for lieutenant governor.
Reports from various quarters say a large crowd will depart Roswell tonight for Dayton excursion. Visitors aim to view the big gas well and enjoy the trip for pleasure and curiosity about the gas flow.
Judge Taft and William Jennings Bryan will meet at the Chicago Association of Commerce banquet on October 7, per Republican speakers bureau chairman Dixon. Taft may also speak in Galesburg October 7, with local citizens inviting Bryan. Dixon dismisses claims Taft avoids Bryan.
In St. Joseph Missouri on September 18 a blaze at the Swift Packing Plant in South St. Joseph sent forty men overcome by heat and smoke. Firemen faced a basement origin in the cold storage building and could not fully control the flames until morning. Loss estimated around $60,000 with most workers out of danger.
The mother of R. H. Kemp of this city and W. L. Kemp of Artesia died after five years in the Pecos Valley. The body was shipped this morning with W. L. Kemp taking it to Roswell and R. H. Kemp proceeding to Alexandria Virginia for funeral services and burial. Many in Pecos Valley knew her and mourn her passing.
Hella Temple of Dallas Texas to hold a Shrine meeting in Amarillo on October 3 inviting Roswell Masons to attend. Ballut Abyad Temple plans a Shriners conclave in Albuquerque on September 28, largely attended as it precedes the National Irrigation Congress.
The Hol lingsworth Twins appeared in a four act comedy drama "Because He Loved Her" by Nat Goodwin and Margaret Anglin with Miss Maud Hollingsworth as Kate Vernon and Mr M A Brewer as Jim Radburn. The audience applauded Prof Helmick's moving pictures, especially Eagles Nest. critics called it the best popular price show in Roswell.
Mrs. Oliver Smith and Mrs. Roy Daniel issue invitations for a five hundred party at the Country Club on September 24 at 2 30 PM. A large number of invitations have been sent.

Mrs. A. A. Kemp, 71, died yesterday at 3 30 p m at her son E B Kemp’s artesia home after a lengthy illness caused by a complication of diseases. She was a mother of R H Kemp and noted in the artesia community.
