National Merit semifinalists named in New Mexico

The National Merit Scholarship Corp announced 86 New Mexico high school seniors as semifinalists for the 1969 70 competition. Included are Thomas Malone Artesia and Leslie Harris Mark Schlessman Roswell. They compete for about 3 000 scholarships to be awarded next spring.

Laird predicts draft calls fall with troops pulled from Vietnam

Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird said draft calls will drop as Vietnam troop reductions and a 20 000 man overall cutback reduce U S armed strength. He said the October draft call of 29 000 likely will be reduced and urged Congress to pass reform laws. The Nixon plan aims for further withdrawals by Dec 15 and a 60 000 total pullout, with 126 000 total strength cut as an economy measure while the Air Force plan remains pending.

Kennedy Defends Haynsworth at Senate Hearing

AEC Eyes Bigger Nevada Alaska Nuclear Tests

The Atomic Energy Commission praised a near megaton underground blast on Pahute Mesa Nevada and plans further large tests in Nevada and Alaska. The Tuesday detonation near Las Vegas yielded just under one megaton and prompted talk of warhead development for missiles. An Amchitka one megaton shot is planned next month if safe, with multiple megatons possible thereafter.
