Roswell Shrine Patrol riders face delays as inexperience with scooters causes spills during practice. Jack Chew required stitches after a spill with Dr. Frederick Brown nearby. Other riders reported skinned knees and throttling troubles as authorities blamed loose gravel and gear issues.
The National Merit Scholarship Corp announced 86 New Mexico high school seniors as semifinalists for the 1969 70 competition. Included are Thomas Malone Artesia and Leslie Harris Mark Schlessman Roswell. They compete for about 3 000 scholarships to be awarded next spring.
The New Mexico Constitutional Convention continued work on the education article after adopting three of 14 sections. Leaders postponed key votes to allow more time, with a Saturday session planned to consider the judiciary article and a shift to a nine member appointed state board of education.
Cash draws 12 000 fans for two weekday rodeo nights at the New Mexico State Fair in Albuquerque with nightly concerts through Thursday before Jimmie Rogers closes the run. Attendance and horse race handle set records as Indian Day highlights events and livestock judging progresses.
Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird said draft calls will drop as Vietnam troop reductions and a 20 000 man overall cutback reduce U S armed strength. He said the October draft call of 29 000 likely will be reduced and urged Congress to pass reform laws. The Nixon plan aims for further withdrawals by Dec 15 and a 60 000 total pullout, with 126 000 total strength cut as an economy measure while the Air Force plan remains pending.
At a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Senator Kennedy challenged the late Robert F. Kennedy’s stance on Haynsworth disqualification. The discussion centered on conflicts of interest in the Deer ing Milliken case and a vending stake related to a Darlington plant. Haynsworth refused to reveal the stance he would take on cases, saying he would keep an open mind if confirmed.
The Atomic Energy Commission praised a near megaton underground blast on Pahute Mesa Nevada and plans further large tests in Nevada and Alaska. The Tuesday detonation near Las Vegas yielded just under one megaton and prompted talk of warhead development for missiles. An Amchitka one megaton shot is planned next month if safe, with multiple megatons possible thereafter.
