Voters turn out under bright weather with 2342 ballots recorded by 3 PM across the city. The AP notes strong participation with ballots counted statewide at 2036 to 296, reflecting early results in local and state totals.
Interest grows in a special train from Roswell to Clovis next Tuesday to hear Wendell Willkie. The round trip costs 2.20 with about 135 tickets sold locally. Tickets are available at Leland's First National Bank Chaves County Building & Loan Roswell Building and Loan and Chamber of Commerce. Willkie will speak from the rear platform for thirty minutes onboard.
A British warship halted the Philippine freighter Dona Aurora about 100 miles off the California coast and removed an Italian engineer. De La Rama agents on the Pacific coast confirmed the report but had no direct word from Captain M C Ventosa, master of the vessel, who reportedly asked for instructions after not receiving a receipt for the engineer. The incident reportedly occurred within the 300 mile neutrality zone.
Santa Fe New Mexico September 14 Attorney General Filo Sedillo said the attorney general's office would stay open until 6 p m to answer legal questions raised by New Mexico's first direct primary. Officials requested extended hours to ensure compliance with primary mandates.
National Republican committee man Cyrus McCormick announced four prominent New Mexico Democrats were invited to board Willkie's special train as it passes through the state. Invitations extended to Governor Miles, Senators Hatch and Chavez, and Rep. Dempsey. The train will stop in Amarillo, Clovis, Vaughn, and Belen with local groups invited to join, while campaign workers and county chairs prepare meetings after the speech in Albuquerque at 8 p.m.
The Eastern New Mexico State Fair board approved a plan to host a U S Army detachment at the fair and rodeo, continuing a policy of keeping the event current with the times and adding a military presence to the proceedings.
Little La Luz took top honors in the Otero County Fair community exhibits. Mescalero was second and Tlurrosa third. Alamogordo High School won educational exhibits with AAA second and FHA third. Tularosa won the Future Farmers of America event with Alamogordo second and La Luz third.
L. B. Boellner entered a bouquet of Mur phy's Masterpiece dahlias and a bouquet of Lord Autum dahlias. Mrs. W. P. Turner submitted a bouquet of zinnias. Mrs. Amos Bullard entered a bouquet of marigolds.
Mendelson, a 62 year old Newark druggist, was robbed after he gave change for a dollar for a ten cent cigar. A companion flashed a gun and demanded money. The bandits fled with 90 cents as Mendelson pursued them shouting for his change.
New Mexico held its first direct primary election today with a Democratic senatorial contest between Rep. J. J. Dempsey and Sen. Dennis Chavez and a gubernatorial battle between Gov. John E. Miles and former Governor Clyde Tingley. Louise Coe and eight other Democrats sought the open congressional seat, while only two major state officers did not seek re nomination. On the Republican side Albert K. Mitchell faced former Governor R. C. Dillon for the Senate nomination as 193,000 voters weighed nominees for all state offices and numerous local posts.

Albuquerque dispatch reports Joe Cate of Santo Domingo Indian Territory acquired a bride a new car and a glass of wine then faced trouble. He was fined 100 dollars for driving while intoxicated and chose to sacrifice his car to pay the fine at one dollar a day. The court permitted him to try to reclaim his auto and recover his down payment.

Governor Miles announced plans to appoint a state draft board on Monday to administer the nation’s first peacetime conscription act in New Mexico. The bill, approved by Congress, awaits President Roosevelt’s signature. the board will then name local boards to register all men aged 21 through 35.
Governor Miles signed a call for a New Mexico special legislative session to convene September 30. The session will focus on passage of measures to ease assessment burdens on owners of uncultivated agricultural land in the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy district, including proposed deferment of assessments.
A strong gust toppled a furniture truck delivery, throwing James Link from the cab. The mattress struck him on the pavement, leaving Link with several broken ribs and a fractured collar bone and he was hospitalized.
In Chicago, the White Sox beat the Philadelphia Athletics 6 to 3 to extend their winning streak to six as Potter and F Hayes allowed nine hits while Knott Appleton Brown and Tresh contributed on defense and offense.
