The Roswell Independent School District appears to have reduced overcrowding in some areas but still faces a projected enrollment shortage. Superintendent Fred McDonald and staff met midweek to plan how to balance teacher loads with large classes.
An express train carrying migrant workers collided head on with a domestic train near central Portugal. Early death toll estimates ranged from 50 to 300, with Prime Minister Mario Soares visiting the crash site. Officials disagree on fatalities as survivors recall flames and people trapped in wreckage.

At the New Mexico State Fair three pigs died and ten were injured when metal pig pens were electrified during a Monday pig show. Damon's 14-year-old son Damon Graham was shocked while freeing a hog. he was treated and released. James Jones and Kevin Floyd were taken to Lovelace Medical Center but not seriously hurt.
The Senate blocked an end to a filibuster on a tougher sanctions bill against white-ruled South Africa by a 57 to 41 vote, three votes shy of the needed 60. Democrats vow another vote by year’s end while Reagan pledges a veto if it passes.
