A wartime report indicates British leaders warned Germany that a cross channel invasion would follow current air raids. The notice emphasizes imminent Allied operations and calls on readers to stay alert as tensions rise across the channel.
Berlin reports via well connected German sources that daily bombings against London will commence with 2,500 planes, four trips per day from France, to target munitions and government sites as part of a broader invasion threat. The informant claims Britain is already defeated, with invasion possible if British resistance falters.
Merchants of Portales gathered at Nickson Coffee Shop for a dinner that generated strong support for the 18th annual Eastern New Mexico State Fair. Officials outlined plans, including Sept 19 20 flag decor and expanded 4 H and educational exhibits. Local leaders touted anticipated entries from Chaves Eddy De Baca and Roosevelt counties and urged more booth space.
Thirty seven aliens have been registered at the Roswell post office under federal defense law requiring non citizens to register by December 26. Mrs Mary McCullough postmaster said registrations would be taken every Tuesday afternoon and fingerprinting is required, so a special time was set.
The Chaves County Republican Women’s Club will hold a pre election rally tomorrow at 3 30 PM at the Chamber of Commerce Frank Wortman Republican county chairman will give the main talk All members and interested parties are invited to attend.
New Mexico shows generally fair weather with isolated thunderstorms over central and southern continental divide. Colorado expects fair conditions tonight and Thursday with cooler southeast and north central areas, warmer east Thursday. Arizona reports variable high cloudiness with scattered showers and thunderstorms and little temperature change. West Texas remains fair tonight and Thursday with a warmer Thursday ahead.
ALAMOGORDO New Mexico September 11 Governor Miles released a campaign statement claiming his administration saved taxpayers about six thousand dollars daily by cutting costs from 22.3 million to 20.142 million in one year. He contrasted this with former governor Clyde Tingley who alleged a two thousand dollar daily saving. Miles cited figures by the state taxpayers association covering fiscal years ending June 30 1938 and June 30 1940 and accused his opponent of wasteful spending. He also pointed to two highway contracts from September 1 1938 showing a bid of 30 cents per ton under open bidding versus 98 cents per ton under an informal bid to a contractor favored by the opponent.
Santa Fe announces that Col. D C Pearson superintendent of New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell offered the school's cooperation with a Hollywood film company planning to use the school as a scene. Preliminary talks have occurred with Governor Miles's office, which said Pearson pledged the institute would cooperate, including furnishing uniforms cadets horses and ground space.
Ted Jones reports a letter from Jack Lawton of Universal Pictures praising a scrapbook of scenes from New Mexico MilItary Institute and other locations. The pieces were shown to Universal’s executive committee, signaling interest but noting adaptations may be needed to fit scripts to the locale. The scrapbook was a joint effort with Gov. Miles and Col. Pearson, highlighting Miles’ push to attract film productions to the state.

Across New Mexico the primary campaign heats up with Rep J J Dempsey accusing Senator Dennis Chavez of letting Colorado and Texas threaten the state s water while Chavez cites duty to New Mexico as the measure of a senator. At Fort Sumner Clyde Tingley backer J R Wrinkle slams Governor Miles as Jekyll and Hyde over the hot race.
Two Californians died and four others were seriously injured when their car left U S Highway 66 five miles west of Santa Rosa New Mexico. Victims named were Vincent R Millard 25 Hollywood California James Albert Melton about 50 Los Angeles and others rushed to Tucumcari Hospital with skull fractures. The driver reportedly lost control and the car plunged over an embankment.
Chaves county ballot boxes for the upcoming primary are prepared with all supplies, said county clerk D P Greiner. The county has 34 voting places, 17 with an extra box to count judges in districts that produced 200 or more votes for governor in the last general election.
Sen Ashurst concedes renomination defeat to Judge Ernest W McFarland of Florence as 168 of 438 precincts report. Murdock wins Democratic renomination. Osborn defeats Gov. Bob Jones for the Democratic gubernatorial nod. Wilikie and others trail with under 5 000 votes.
Above normal rainfall in August lifts range conditions across New Mexico with livestock improving. Cattle herds show better flesh and calves gaining well, while sheep also improve as feed grows. Calf contracts run eight to nine cents, lambs around seven, with October shipments expected.
Washington reports the War Department plans a separate 21 through 30 registration if Burke-Wadsworth allows a 21 to 44 age bracket. Congress debates upper age limits amid stalled conscription in a six hour House Senat e conference session. Leader Sheppard says compromise talks continue on age 39 versus 44.
Supporters of U S Senator Dennis Chavez rejected charges by his Democratic primary rival J J Dempsey that Chavez imperilled Pecos and Rio Grande water rights. A Martinez Albuquerque Chavez For Senator Club statement called Dempsey’s claims utterly false and challenged him to question state engineer Thomas M McClure who is familiar with the relevant legislation.
About 35 Roswell businessmen toured Dexter Hagerman Lake Arthur Artesia Carlsbad Hobbs Lovington and Tatum by two chartered New Mexico Transportation Co buses. They planned a luncheon at Carlsbad and attending Lovington Rodeo, with musicians and Eric Graves in charge. A September 19 trip to Vaughn Fort Sumner Clovis and Portales was announced, with the Roswell High School band to attend on September 20. The Chamber of Commerce merchants committee sponsored the trips.
The Townsend Club will hold its regular meeting Friday night to discuss several important matters. Club officers said a large attendance is desired.
Carrizozo New Mexico September 11 J E Hall Lincoln county attorney announced support for state senator Louise Coe for the Democratic congressional nomination. Hall said Coe would be as prominent in national congress as in the state senate and that New Mexico would profit from her election.
