Roswell City Council approves Steven Polasek from Keller Texas as the next city manager despite objections over his 155000 annual salary and severance package. Councilor Juan Oropesa criticized pay exceeding the posted 110000 to 130000 range.
In Roswell, James Duffey mantened a campaign fund advantage for Chaves County District 1 commissioner as of Sept 1 with 9,783 cash on hand while opponent Ortega reported 863. Duffey received multiple GOP and local donor contributions, including a 1,000 gift from Dexter's Three Amigos Daily and 500 from several local businesses. Ortega raised 800 during the same period. The race remains the sole county contest on the November ballot with voters limited to the 1st district east of Main Street.
Roswell Parks Director Tim Williams said residents at five Yucca Recreation Center workshops were about evenly split on renovating the 1911 facility or building a new center. He noted issues include a leaky roof and ADA noncompliance due to an unconnected elevator, with at least 60 thousand dollars needed for elevator work.
Dona Ana County commissioners approve a 5-0 resolution to become a safe county and bar staff from inquiring about immigration status unless required by law. The move follows a February petition with 10 000 signatures and advocacy by the Border Network for Human Rights.
