The Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company announces dial service for Roswell. The $1.7 million expansion includes new dial equipment, building additions, outside cables, and increased long distance capacity to serve Roswell and surrounding areas.
Funeral services are scheduled in Phoenix for Greg Garcia a veteran attorney who died Tuesday at age 60 from a heart attack. He was widely known across Arizona and New Mexico for his legal work and public service.
Former Queen Narriman files suit for divorce from exiled King Farouk and seeks alimony of 14 350 dollars per month. The case centers on dissolution of the royal marriage with prominent involvement of Egypt's former royal circle.

In a four nation truce commission session Polish interpreter Jan Hajdukiewicz accused the Americans of kidnapping him after fleeing an inspection team into American hands. Swedish Gen. Grafstrom noted Poland would protest while reasserting Red claims of brutality in prisoner exchanges.
Jan Hajdukiewicz a 28 year old Polish interpreter who fled communist Poland and sought political asylum in the United States spoke at a Seoul news conference. He said the Polish people oppose the Red regime but overthrow would require outside help and not now. He urged escape as a last chance and expressed fear for his family remaining in Poland.
Alvin Stockton a leading New Mexico Republican and former speaker of the house said he would run for governor in 1954 if the party desired. He noted a Republican trend or swing in New Mexico and criticized current governor Mechem’s performance while praising GOP prospects statewide and nationally for the 1954 election. Stockton spoke at a La Posta luncheon with county GOP leaders during a Las Cruces visit to old friends and acquaintances.
Hiroshi Miyamura, the only living Japanese American Medal of Honor recipient, rested after a whirlwind hometown homecoming in Gallup New Mexico. He enjoyed a banquet hosted by the Albuquerque-Gallup chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League as leaders praised his service with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and stressed loyalty and acceptance.
Members of the Sheriff's Posse Auxiliary announce the Rodeo Queen contest starts September 21 and runs two weeks to pick the official queen of the Posse Rodeo at the Eastern New Mexico State Fair October 6 to 10. The winner is crowned October 6 and receives Western attire to keep. Contestants must be 16 to 25, able to ride well, may skip the barrel race, and sponsors are urged from local organizations and merchants. For details contact Auxiliary members or Mrs. C. M. A Carrizozo wedding dance attended by about 500 people erupted in a fracas with 50 to 60 participants. Sheriff William G. Bradley said tear gas failed to stop the clash and that he and one deputy spoke to the crowd until they dispersed after about 45 minutes. No arrests reported. charges may be filed.
At Walla Walla, eight hundred inmates triggered a half million dollar disturbance after a fire at the metals plant. Guards used tear gas in three volleys to quell the riot as 80 guards and 30 officers restored order. two convicts treated in hospital, five moved to isolation, and damage estimated up to 150000.

Thirty five people returned last night after visiting five schools and five communities in the first of three Hi Neighbor trips. The second trip will include Tatum Lovington Hobbs Carlsbad Artesia Arthur Hagerman and Dexit. Jack Rodden Dwight McNally directed and filmed for KSWS TV while Lee Bell and his orchestra provided music. Readings at Hondo grade school and Ruidoso grade schools drew praise for singing and Virginia reel numbers. At a luncheon W W Watt president of the Ruidoso Chamber spoke of the new bank and tourism growth.
The first bale of the 1953-54 Roswell crop was ginned by Farmers Inc. Gin No. 1 for Byrd Bullard on Tuesday. A 517 pound bale came from 1420 pounds of seed cotton and was sold to W. L. Troutt & Co. The gin manager is Herbert Chewning with Ray Simms as weigher. The bale headed to the government classing office in Carlsbad for a staple grade report.
County superintendent Carrol White said enrollment figures for Elk Elkin Flying H and five other schools are not yet known. Registration for the 1953-54 session began, but totals remain incomplete.
Hong Kong mourns six Royal Navy personnel after a Chinese Communist warship fired on a Hong Kong patrol launch in the Pearl River Estuary. One victim identified as E. Frank Gower, a reserve captain, with five other sailors killed. survivors treated under secrecy at the Hong Kong hospital. Funeral services set for tomorrow.
