Gov. Edwin L. Mechem says a private poll of 55 legislators shows a split on readjusting the 70 mph speed limit and supports his stance that the Legislature would not accept a 60 mph limit. The survey notes 27 in favor of readjustment, 26 opposed, with two undecided, amid criticism of State Police tactics.
Senator Mansfield called for an immediate conference with Saudi Arabia and Egypt to preserve Arab nationalism from Soviet pressure. He also urged the UN to set up international arms controls for the region as the U S accelerates defense aid to Jordan Lebanon Turkey and Iraq amid Syrian tensions.
Santa Fe The State Health Department announced a venereal disease blood testing program for 700 Navajos employed on farms in the Bluewater area near Grants. Four Navajos in training with the Health Department and the U S Public Health Service assist as investigators.
An officer testified that William S. Girard had no authorization to fire on scrap metal collectors near a firing range at Maebashi Japan. The trial heard that collectors said soldiers often chased them away using blank or empty cartridge cases.
John A. Barnett, vice president of the New Mexico division of the American Cancer Society and president of the Chaves county unit, was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation. Dr. John F. Griffin praised Barnett for his role in the reorganization and fundraising success that helped New Mexico surpass its $100,000 Crusade quota. Chaves County led in fundraising with $11,400.
Roswell city schools report 7 585 students enrolled by day three this year an increase of 311 from opening day and 637 more than the 1956 third day total The counts cover first through twelfth grades with detailed by grade figures for each level from first through twelfth grades and high school divisions.
Gardner-Webb College student Martha Mason returns for her sophomore year living across from the men’s dorm. She attends a full class schedule via a two way radio from her iron lung and earned top freshman honors with a 97.22 average last year. She has been confined since polio struck in 1948.
Airman James D. Allen of the 812th Transportation Sqdn at Walker Air Force Base suffered a back injury in an automobile collision 3 miles west of Sycamore on U S Highway 70 380 near the Holiday Inn at 8 05 last night. Warren A. Vick and Ted Trotman drove 1957 and 1954 Chevrolet cars. damage estimated at 1000 and 400 respectively.
National Guardsmen blocked integration at Central High School and arrested four Minneapolis men, including Murray Gallinson who carried a knife as he was driven away. The three others were handed to state police and escorted from the city. A federal judge was to hear the Little Rock School Board plea for a truce as the crisis unfolded. President Eisenhower pledged to use all legal means to enforce the federal Constitution and would return to Washington for talks with the attorney general.
The New Mexico drought hay aid may have overpaid as much as $10,900 in state funds to ineligible recipients. Col. John Chapman blamed federal authorities for the improperly declared eligibility and cited wealthy ranchers including Mrs. Dessie Sawyer and Floyd Lee as examples. He warned about using replacement calves to obtain aid and noted the state may still claim its share if irregular payments are found.

State Game Department official Carl Berghauser near the gorge hopes the attempt is canceled after past recovery of bodies. The river gorge is 60 to 65 miles long and treacherous with mud making rock visibility hard.
Blanche D Biwer, who pleaded guilty in district court and had sentence deferred until Sept 30, entered an innocent plea yesterday in justice court on a forgery complaint. The two count deal alleges forgery involving two checks dated Aug 10 and Aug 16 for 197.50 and 48 totaling 245.
Unions picketed the F. M. Reeves & Sons cement plant in Roswell with about 11 workers leaving. Pickets also blocked access near Walker AFB gates and the south perimeter road, aiming to pressure recognition. The dispute centres on union demands and Reeves management stance, with possible National Labor Relations Board involvement unclear at press time.
Robert O. Anderson of Malco Refineries Roswell New Mexico and Wilshire Oil Los Angeles becomes president of the Aspen Institute succeeding Walter P Paepcke. Paepcke remains chairman of the board. The institute founded in 1959 offers summer programs in humanistic education for executives and a health center with preventive medicine and fitness programs.
