Johnson Signs 3.6 Percent Pay Increase for Federal Workers

President Johnson signed into law a 3.6 percent pay rise for 1.8 million federal employees including postal workers. The act, retroactive to Oct 1, costs about $641.5 million annually and aims to align salaries with private industry for equal effort, per Johnson's statement.

Hunting Accident Claims Sgt Joseph Hattaway in New Mexico

MSgt. Joseph E. Hattaway, 35, of 209 E. McCune, died after a hunting accident Saturday afternoon in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The Walker Air Force Base sergeant with the 6th Strategic Aerospace wing was with four other airmen about 18 miles northwest of Ocate when he was shot through the chest and died instantly.

Marines Repel Viet Cong Tide Near Da Nang

A Marine company repelled a Viet Cong human wave assault at a camp 10 miles southwest of Da Nang. About 56 Viet Cong were killed in an hour long predawn fight. Marine losses were described as moderate with three Marines killed at a small outpost. Da Nang was briefly off limits to U.S. personnel amid rising attacks in the region.
