OAS adopts La Paz Declaration on human rights and ideological pluralism

The Organization of American States approved a 15 point La Paz Declaration affirming non intervention and ideological pluralism. It calls for full respect for human rights and condemns torture and terrorism while urging elimination of destabilizing economic measures. It also proposes finding common positions in the OAS before engaging in other bodies like the UN.

Fort rules on unionization at Eastern New Mexico University

District Judge Harvey Fort ruled there is no law requiring the university to recognize the union but allowed the Southwest Council of Industrial Workers to remain in the lawsuit against two hospital officials. The hearing addressed union organizing among Emma Balamos and Patricia Burnett with the council alleging improper discipline and participation in union activity. Fort cited NLRB rules for handling the dispute and noted employees may discuss union matters during breaks. The union seeks a hearing after Burnett’s five day suspension and Balamos’ five day suspension, with evidence kept on file for the final hearing.

Houston police check Klan interest in laser pistol

The Houston Police Department will investigate Scott Nelson former Imperial Wizard of the Texas Fiery Knights of the Ku Klux Klan after he sought contact with Gene Robbins of Roswell about a purported laser pistol. Nelson claimed to be the father of a Houston officer and may have pursued the weapon for police use, though police deem such use unlikely.

EPA approves 50 day reopening of Church Rock uranium mill

EPA officials concur with New Mexico authorities to reopen United Nuclear Corporation’s Church Rock mill for a 50 day trial after a tailings dam break last July dumped contaminants into the Rio Puerco. Cleanup operations have been underway since the incident.
