A dramatic blaze on the 11th floor of the 19 story Bunker Hill Towers in downtown Los Angeles killed at least three people. Two residents leapt 11 stories to their deaths as hundreds were trapped and firefighters battled the flames from 3 a.m. until it was under control about an hour later.
President Carter in Providence says the Senate Finance Committee version of a windfall profits tax could swell oil company gains to at least 374 billion dollars over 10 years and warns it might reach 1 trillion if oil prices stay high. He contrasts it with the House bill and meets with governors including Grasso and Carey.
The Supreme Court agreed to hear government appeals on whether living matter can be patented. The cases involve an oil eating bacteria by Ananda Chakrabarty and a microorganism used to produce the antibiotic lincomycin from Upjohn. The court also announced other actions including tobacco access limits and indigent mother rights in child custody appeals.
The Civil Aeronautics Board approved Pan American World Airways bid to acquire National Airlines in a landmark deal. The merger creates the seventh-largest U.S. airline and grants Pan Am major domestic routes while forcing surrender of National International routes to London. President Carter has 60 days to decide on the international provisions.
Hall of Famer Willie Mays met with Commissioner Bowie Kuhn then announced he will take an executive role with Bally International at Bally Park Place in Atlantic City, forcing disengagement from baseball. He remains under contract as a part time Mets coach and accepted Kuhn’s view on stepping away.
Peter Schmuck of Santa Ana says the California Department of Motor Vehicles discriminates against him by denying his request for a personalized license plate bearing his name. The DMV lists Schmuck among banned vulgarities, obscenities and insults.
RCC adds two more groups to Roswell convention list as the city eyes growth. Gary Tonjes says NMPTA and MMML support eases bids. NMPTA plans 200 attendees for April 1980. MMML expects 400 in summer 1981. Burkstaller notes convention activity boosts local economy. Tonjes earlier secured NM EMTs convention for October 1980.
