Observatory says Sputnik will fly unseen in daylight
The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory announced that Sputnik and its carrier rocket will become invisible over the United States within 40 to 50 days as they pass overhead in daylight or darkness rather than twilight. Satellite visibility may last a few days longer for trained observers.

Artesia Man Dies in Two Car Crash Toll Reaches 350
Artesia, Oct. 26. Taylor Ross, 78, died from injuries after a two car collision near here on Oct. 20. The crash occurred at a country road and U S 285 four miles south of Artesia. The death raises New Mexico’s year to date traffic toll to 350, compared with 310 at this time last year.

Military Fires 60 Million in IRBM Tests
The U.S. military reports tests costing over 60 million dollars for intermediate range ballistic missiles in the past year, with about 12 million in the last week. The scope covers Army Jupiter and Air Force Thor, plus Navy Polaris, and includes large-scale developmental firings and outside testing centers. Abran Rivas two years old was swept to his death in a swift irrigation canal at Tularosa Saturday afternoon. The child played near the bank while his father worked nearby and his body was carried several blocks by the current. Funeral services were to be held at Tularosa today.
