Roswell Chamber of Commerce announces a new Blue Cross Blue Shield health care plan for members effective December 1. Enrollment runs 90 days, with district supervisor Kenneth v. Riker stating enrollment begins December 1. Chamber President Rex N. Brown credits the insurance task force for proposing the option.
Acting Gov. Roberto Mondragon told reporters that the Fifth Judicial District which covers Chaves Lea and Eddy counties sends a disproportionate share of juvenile offenders to the state Boy’s School at Springer. He pointed to Roswell and Hobbs and noted Chaves County accounts for 15 percent of the school’s population though it has only 4 percent of the state population. He blamed a harsh judiciary and school-system problems and hinted further factors in play.
Israeli official Yoram Ziv visits Roswell and discusses Israel US ties and oil dependence. He cites Dayan resignation as personal, notes Techiya party rise, and comments on coalition stability and Sinai return stances. Mondragon comment follows on undocumented workers and immigration quotas for Latin America and Asia.
Detroit UPI reports marathon negotiations between Chrysler Corp and the United Auto Workers continued past the noon cutoff with signs a scaled down pact is near. UAW President Fraser said he would not bargain past the deadline unless a settlement was imminent.
Three young artists presented the first sheet of 1979 Christmas seals to President Carter. The seals are miniature versions of 54 paintings created by elementary school students in a nationwide classroom project two years earlier, under the national chairmanship of Charles Schulz.
Governor Bruce King and Rep. Mel Price met over the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in southeastern New Mexico but offered no accord. King seeks state consultation rights and NRC licensing. Price opposes both, leaving WIPP stalled unless concessions are made.
Arch bishop Robert Sanchez of Santa Fe will bless the new wing of St John s Catholic Church in Roswell as 170 seats added and the main sanctuary renovated.
