Snow Reports Reach Northwest New Mexico

Snow fell Saturday across northwestern New Mexico with accumulations up to two inches in towns including Gallup Grants Socorro Datil Quemada Magdalena and Reserve. A major Rocky Mountain storm prompted four to six inch warnings, colder weather expected through Sunday, and officials cautioned hunters and stockmen about possible heavy snow while main highways from Gallup to Silver City were not seriously affected.

Johnson improves as stitches removed and dental work done

President Johnson, recovering from gall bladder and kidney stone surgery, had stitches removed and dental work completed at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Doctors say he feels comfortable and could leave the hospital soon, with six weeks to full recovery. plans include a possible return to the White House or Texas ranch for further recuperation.

Four adults and a child die in New Mexico traffic crash

Two Albuquerque women, a man from Albuquerque, a 5-year-old girl from Truth or Consequences, and a Deming truck driver are listed among New Mexico's latest traffic fatalities. The women died Saturday on U.S. 64 84 285 near Espanola after a failed passing maneuver caused a tractor trailer collision. The 5-year-old, Sherry Bickman, perished in a separate crash on U.S. 60 near Fort Sumner. her mother Lucille Bickman was injured.

Scout Day at Walker Air Force Base Draws 800

About 800 Boy Scouts and scouts age youths attended Scout Day at Walker AFB sponsored by Conquistador Council and the base. Lt. Larry Arnold led the program with Col. Norman Ray welcoming attendees. They toured the flight line, saw KC-135 and B-52 jets, watched a karate demonstration and a firefighting display, and Explorer scouts flew a 45 minute orientation in a C-123. The event aimed to acquaint youths with the Air Force and spark further interest in scouting.

Fourteen Arrested at Albuquerque Demonstration

Four teens and 11 University of New Mexico students were arrested Saturday in Albuquerque on littering and obscene literature charges tied to a Viet Nam war protest near Kirtland Air Force Base. James A. Kennedy of the DuBois Clubs, among those detained, was released later on a $50 bond.
