The 11th annual Roswell fair will open tomorrow morning at 11 with a gala parade at 10. It promises the largest exhibit display yet with beef cattle, new features, and ideal weather. The Queen of the Fair will reign after coronation at the General Exhibits building Saturday night, with prizes of 100, 50 and 25 for first to third on the winning float.
Vienna dispatch reports Wien erzeitung front pages an intimation that martial law may be declared soon as restoration of the death penalty is urged. A Lyons plot to seize arms by Nazi officers prompts wide police probes across garrisons while Washington moves to curb oil output and fix minimum prices under NRA policy. Secretary Ickes announces November 1 as start of curbs with price floors set to influence gasoline costs.
Paris October 17. Premier Edouard Daladier, calm yet grim, challenged Adolf Hitler over Germanys withdrawal from the disarmament conference. In a tense deputies chamber he asked why Germany would abandon talks while it claimed readiness to destroy armaments, then inadvertently sought the Presidents desk. The chamber approved extreme absenteeism in the finance bill by 470 to 120 after Daladiers challenge on taxes and cabinet fate.
Former New Mexican James Fielding Hinkie of Roswell and three other New Mexicans were elected to the honorary Thirty Third Degree by the Supreme Council of Scottish Rite Masons Southern Jurisdiction during its Washington session. The dispatch lists other at large selections and Knights Commander of the Court of Honour, with additional names from across the country.
City records show four arrests may have solved several robberies. By three this afternoon the city clerk issued two beer dispensers licenses eight eating house licenses five wholesalers licenses and twenty five consumer licenses for beer sales with meals.
Portales Chamber of Commerce secretary reports community support for the Eastern New Mexico State Fair with Portales Citizenship pledging help. Four men were arrested at 1012 North Washington Avenue as deputies and city officers recovered a large quantity of alleged stolen goods. Suspects include FE. W. Lewis 45 Plummer Muril 44 Carl Quillen 24 and Melvin Williams 35, with Muril and Williams admitting some robberies and Quillen and Lewis held for investigation. Evidence ties to multiple recent thefts including vehicles and groceries.
The speaker contends the league failed due to lack of power and fear of pledges. He argues economic boycott could force policy, saying nations would abandon trade with Japan and sacrifice much to avert war. He dismisses trade restraints as ineffective against international conflict.
In Gallup New Mexico a special court martial against six of seven strike leaders ended abruptly as prosecutors moved to dismiss the charges for interfering with martial law enforcement in the coal region. The adjournment followed news that Herbert Benjamin of New York, president of the National Unemployed Council, was to be tried today for attempting to address strikers last Thursday.
The Commodity Credit Corporation in Washington announced its completion and that loans of 10 cents per pound on the unsold portion of this year’s cotton crop will be available this week. The Delaware chartered organization was created to implement President Roosevelt’s plan to aid cotton growers.
Roswell fuel prices may not rise after a crude oil price fix. The Record, citing a leading local agent, reports most locally sold gasoline is around 70 octane. With crude around $1.11 a barrel, impact on prices remains uncertain and could be negligible.
Arden R. Boellner, CAPT in the Officers' Reserve Corps since 1926, was sworn in as a major in the Infantry Reserve by Captain R. E. Bower at regimental headquarters in the Federal Building yesterday. The promotion backdated to October 3, per War Department, assigns him to the 410th Infantry.
Roswell mail carriers distributed compliance questionnaires to all local employers concerning adherence to the NRA agreement.
In Memphis on October 17, Mrs R G Shannon and Kathryn Kelly two life sentence inmates in the Charles Urschel kidnapping, remained in federal custody. Shannon went to Shelby county penal farm as a government prisoner while Kelly was taken to a station for transfer likely to Cincinnati after arrival from Oklahoma City.
Opening day events list a grand parade formation chaired by C J Stillwell, with parade routes through Main Alameda Ala Chartison Tilden and back to Main. Highlights include a 10 am general parade, 11 am livestock shows and rides, rodeo, a 3 pm xylophone concert, 6 pm midway grand opening, 7 pm baby contest, 5 pm cowboy dance, and a 9 pm tumbling show by Five Wonders at the Fair Grounds.
Will Robinson of Carlsbad spoke at the Kiwanis Club urging a fair chance for the Lane Law. He called it the first intelligent step toward bridging open saloon and prohibition and urged state cooperation in enforcement. Guests included J. P. Osburne Sr. and Jr. of Miami Texas with a Hereford exhibit, H. C. Barger of Gretsch Manufacturing, Fred Schuster of Carlsbad, and the speaker, a former Roswell Kiwanian.
The state corporation commission approved the incorporation of the Pecos Valley Coca Cola Portline Company of Roswell with a $25,000 charter. Incorporators are James F. Johns Ruth W. Johns and Henry S. Johns.
A Boy Scout rally is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the D A V Hut on North Main, inviting local scouts and families to attend and show support.
Santa Fe AP report says Chief Tax Commissioner Byron O. Beall Secretary John Miles and Assistant Secretary Ben Luchini attended the tax association convention in Phoenix today. They plan to return next week and Beall was scheduled to deliver a principal talk.
