Official reports from St. Petersburg and Tokyo outline Japanese forces breaking Russian lines at several points on Oct 17. Sakharov and Oku dispatch progress as Russians defend positions near Shahke river and Sonkhetung while Japan extends gains south of the Shahke river. President Roosevelt signals readiness to use his office if peace moves arise.
The program features piano, voice, violin solos, quartets, trios, chorus and readings by city talent. Proceeds from the entertainment go to the church. Three foreigners arrived in the city for the event.
Two Denver high school teachers were found dead in separate incidents this morning. Police report initial details as a suspected double tragedy affecting the Denver education community. Investigators are reviewing local school records and interviewing staff.
In Memphis a police officer dies trying to arrest a Black man. The suspect is killed as two officers are wounded. The chaotic aftermath includes gunfire and non-English speaking bystanders, with reports of a coaching accident and a Denver incident adding to the confusion.
Report describes arrests of two individuals from Austria linked to a shop raid. A small notebook found on one suspect contained the plea "Please, have you something to work." Authorities state the pair acted in a directed fashion as a six man group.
Roswell merchants sign an agreement to shut stores at 6 pm from now until April 1 1905 excluding Saturdays. Clerks praise the move as giving them evenings off. The notice lists participating firms led by Garton Moss Co Jaffa Prager Co and others and reports on local business changes and residents visiting Artesia.
Elder C. C. Hill pastor of the Christian church stated this morning he has preached sixteen years and baptized eighteen hundred people in that time.
Mr and Mrs Phil Helmig returned Saturday afternoon from a trip to the World’s Fair and to eastern cities where they visited during the week.
Correspondence from the Roswell Daily Records, delayed by difficulties, is welcomed again as trains return. Citizens who claimed independence are glad to see renewed activity, with ongoing buying, selling, and construction. Beginning tomorrow, regular newsletters will be sent as before.
Bound over to the grand jury by Judge Bailey at 10 o’clock, Montgomery failed to post a $500 bond and remains jailed. Marshal Rascoe alleges Montgomery may be a bigamist with a second wife in Texas, while concern about the perjury charge lingers as communication and telephony services resume with Artesia.
Today a train leaves Carlsbad at 7 30 a m with route to Amarillo and daylight transfer over the Pecos at Bueth. Reports say Vice President Avery Turner died as the town prepared for flood repairs and a California police notice cites fraud cases involving Montgomery.
J A Jones of Chicago who recently secured a city franchise to build a gas plant arrived in Roswell last evening. He states work will begin as soon as materials arrive and predicts strong business for the new plant in town.
Entertainment set for Thursday evening October 20 at the South Methodist Episcopal church promises a musical attraction of the season. Also a notice seeking good clean cotton rags for The Record office and a Stark Trees reference to Wyatt Johnson at 521 78.
The Shakespeare Club met Saturday with President Mrs. W. L. Hill presiding. The group studied Macbeth as Mrs. Mason spoke on Macbeth and Lady Macbeth while Miss Costa presented a paper on influences thought to bear upon the play. The second act was read.
The government provides the post office with pamphlets on the U S postal service. The booklet is valuable to business and professional men. Postmaster Kellahin will present copies to those who call for it.
Cy Leland arrived home Saturday afternoon from a trip to the World’s Fair and Chicago. He was with his sister Mrs. Fred Whitman of Chicago who will stay in the city for several weeks. Mrs. McDonald who went with Mr. Leland will not return for now. Thomas Jones came in from Amarillo and will visit relatives in the city for a few days. Jones formerly lived in Roswell and works for Wells Fargo Express Co now in Amarillo. William W. Beavers learned Saturday that his father G. R. Beavers died Friday afternoon in Grayford of heart disease. Beavers plans to attend the funeral.
Joseph Courts and wife of Olin ton Indian Territory visit Mrs. Malloy and stay for health reasons. J A Jones of Chicago arrives and plans to make the city his home and establish a gas plant soon at the Grand Central.
Mr and Mrs Fred Buckley departed Saturday for Artesia to establish a new home. Buckley owns land near Artesia and plans to begin farming there.
L A Lee arrived in the city Saturday from Virginia and left Sunday for McMillan to join the search for his brother who was drowned in the Pecos River.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe E. Page arrived Saturday afternoon from Lincoln aboard the stage. Mrs. Page had stayed at her El Paso home, while Mr. Page had gone to Lincoln to meet her.
Mrs. Hubert Gill left this morning for Ft. Worth and will be absent for several weeks. Samuel Brown, a veteran citizen, left this morning for Kansas City on a business trip.
