Santa Fe warden Harold Swenson suspended prison guard Jose A Vigil for 30 days and recommended dismissal after an escape of two convicts from the old state prison. The inmates Jimmy Williams and Willie Carpenter, both under sentence for second degree murder, were later recaptured. Vigil admitted he parked his car at the old gate and unlocked the south gate, aiding the escape.

SAN FRANCISCO. A Pan American Stratocruiser en route from Honolulu to San Francisco ditched 1000 miles southwest of the city after engine trouble. The Coast Guard Pontchartrain rescued 31 aboard, five with minor injuries. Pilot Richard Ogg circled until daylight, four rafts deployed. Six women and three children were among the passengers.
