Roswell Rush At Selective Service Registration

Roswell men of draft age lined up at 7 a m as registration opened and continued through the day. D P Greiner, county clerk, said numbers registered would be released later as registrants 21 to 35 faced the 9 p m deadline. President Roosevelt called it a day of meaning while officials projected 5 million men to be registered nationwide for the next four and a half years in a defensive preparation program.

Negro from Roswell Will Not Register

Frank Wagoner a 22 year old member of the Civilian Conservation Corps at Ascarate was arrested after refusing to register for the draft. He claimed religious beliefs forbid registration and was jailed in El Paso. Wagoner said his Bible beliefs rather than church teaching guided his stance and deputies tried to persuade him to register.

Miss Elsie Mildred Jones a Roswell public school art teacher died suddenly at 9 20 this morning. Born June 25 1915 in New Cambria Missouri she studied art at Kirksville Teachers College and taught at Junior High and Mark Howell School. Survived by parents two brothers and a sister. services to be held in New Cambria with Talmage Mortuary handling arrangements.

Roswell to Install Joint Police Radio System Next Week

R. C. A. engineer Harry Hill will supervise the installation of a 500-watt police and sheriff radio system. The transmitter arrived yesterday and receivers are due next Monday or Tuesday. The transmitter will be at the police department. receivers go in two sheriff cars, one police car, and one police motorcycle.

City and Red Cross Nurse Coming Man

Miss Mary A Hanley is expected to arrive here next Monday to take the position of city and Red Cross nurse in Roswell announced today by Mrs W A Wilson chairwoman of the Chaves County Red Cross Chapter. Miss Hanley will fill the vacancy created by Miss Marjorie Fairly last summer. Her home is in Madison Wisconsin. The local Red Cross Chapter has been trying to secure a qualified nurse since Miss Fairly left but have just now been able to secure one as the demand for qualified nurses has far exceeded the number available.
