W J McInnes, chairman of the Salvation Army drive, reported at 3 PM that $1861.80 had been raised with $495.25 in cash. All teams had filed reports but none had fully covered their territory. He cautioned the total may fall well short of last year’s $5140.
Las Cruces New Mexico October 12 AP Annual Cattlemen s Day Friday at the New Mexico State College ranch 25 miles north of here is expected to draw stock men from Mexico Arizona and Texas Dr H L Kent president of the State College will be among the principal speakers Also on the program Prof J L Lawton head of animal husbandry and Robert Campbell of Las Cruces a forest reserve member Visitors are expected to remain through the day and a chuck wagon dinner will be served at noon.
Albuquerque October 12 AP a retrial on cattle rustling charges faced Onetimo Chavez after a district court jury failed to reach a verdict. The jury was discharged when a member fell ill and the others said they could not decide innocence. Chavez was accused of stealing cattle from ranchers near the Rio Puerco. Antonio Sandova and Jose Chaves pleaded guilty to participation in the theft.
The New Mexico legislative board of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen endorsed Senators Bronson Cutting and Sam Bratton. Resolutions commended Cutting for devotion to their principles and endorsed Bratton's administration. A joint session of Big Four Brotherhoods committees will discuss endorsements and elect officers.
Albany Oct 12 Calvin Coolidge's Albany speech went unheard by Governor Roosevelt and Speaker Garner who were guests for the evening watching a motion picture in the Mansion miniature theatre. The Governor is known to relax in that venue between duties.
The Chaves County Republicans announce a mass meeting at the Junior High School auditorium next Tuesday night at 7 30 with former Governor R C Dillon the principal speaker. Oliver Lee of Alamogordo Jose E Armijo and U S Attorney Hugh Woodward are scheduled to speak as out of town guests.
Excitement swept Hobbs New Mexico as a well in the residence district released oil and spray but authorities said the danger passed. Fire officials reported no fire threat and the air cleared quickly after containment. Continued on page two.
Cha ves County Woman's Republican Club held a well attended meeting with speakers addressing national issues state convention Hoover and the Republican ticket. Officers for the coming year were announced and pledged renewed effort in the campaign.
Santa Fe on October 12 AP reports the Democratic statewide campaign begins with remarks over Radio Station QOB from seven to seven thirty in the evening. Speakers include W. J. Barker the state chairman and Congressman Dennis Chavez with performances by the Santa Fe Young Democrats band between talks.
Albuquerque trial expected to resume in district court tomorrow for Dr. R L Hust of Albuquerque and Harry Kechter of Santa Fe on murder and criminal abortion charges in the death of Mrs Justine Herrington Elms of Santa Fe.
In Santa Fe on October 12 AP reports state game warden Elliott Barker says an abundance of big game awaits hunters in New Mexico and neighboring states as deer and bear season opens October 25. Hunters will pursue deer, bear, squirrels, wild turkey, quail, band tail pigeons, geese and ducks with overlapping seasons expected in November.
Plans are advancing for an intensive Eastern New Mexico Boy Scout fundraising drive to start October 17. J. B. Savage chairs district 1 efforts, with support from Kiwanis Rotary Lions and Advertising clubs providing volunteers. Roswell workers meet at Nickson Coffee Shop at 7:30 AM and begin soliciting after breakfast with a team including J E Johns G H Hockenson B B Ginsberg Will Purdy Jack Holmes and others.
California Coolidge, returning from his New England retreat, lauded President Hoover as a man who saved the country from disaster. He signaled the final phase of the campaign, with eastern leaders launching a drive after Coolidge told a Madison Square Garden audience that public welfare requires Hoover's reelection. The speech framed Hoover as preventing successive impending disasters.
British army troops rushed to Belfast after rioting flared again near Falls area. One death was reported yesterday with over thirty serious injuries. Police imposed stern quasi military rule to restore quiet by midnight, but shooting resumed around 11 am in Falls.
Francis M. Wilson, Democratic nominee for Missouri governor, died in Kansas City after weeks of bedridden illness from a back injury sustained when a taxicab started suddenly. The 65-year-old Platte City native suffered successive intestinal hemorrhages at 3 and 8 this morning, dying an hour after the second attack.
Gov. Arthur Seligman will address Albuquerque audiences on Saturday evening as part of his re election campaign. First talk is 7 to 7:30 PM on Radio KOB, second at 8 PM in the high school auditorium. Other Democratic candidates, including Mrs. Marguerite Baca and Warren Graham, will join the Governor. The county campaign opens Saturday, October 22.
Mrs. James A. Reed widow of the former Missouri senator died in Kansas City after a brief illness. She was hospitalized with a sudden sore throat that developed into pneumonia. Formerly Lyra M. Olmsted of Cedar Rapids Iowa, she and her husband were married August 1.
Tammany Hall settled on John P. O'Brien as its compromise candidate for mayor of New York City. The former corporation counsel, a close ally of Alfred E. Smith, was nominated unanimously by 32,000 Democratic delegates from five county committees at Madison Square Garden after a radio message from ex-mayor James J. Walker withdrew his candidacy.
New York October 12 Democratic National Chairman James A Farley criticized former President Calvin Coolidge for his speech saying it avoided prohibition while discussing many topics. Farley called the talk another attempt to raise class distinction and noted the public’s interest in prohibition.
Oil buyers push prices higher as Empire Oil and Shell Oil announce weekend increases. Empire posts 10 to 12 cent raises aligning with SinclairPrairie, while Shell and Sun Oil set a 1.10 to 1.12 dollar top in East and Panhandle Texas areas. Oklahoma top climbs to 1.12 per barrel.
State offices closed for Columbus Day with only the supreme court and tax commission observing the holiday. Chief Tax Commissioner Byron O Beall cited heavy workload preventing full observance of the holiday while the state supreme court remains largely open.
Albuquerque Oct 12 The state legislative board of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen endorsed Gov Arthur Seligman and Rep Dennis Chavez for reelection on the Democratic ticket. G L Gibbons of Raton was elected chairman and C M Grahan of Las Vegas was named chairman with Arthur Culver of Albuquerque as secretary and A F Brown of Gallup and R Ross of ? as officers.
Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce and Albuquerque Highway 66 group met to boost tourism through central New Mexico. They noted eastern agencies route travelers via Salt Lake and Yuma gateways, urging better sign boards and paving on Highways 66 and 85 to attract visitors and fix weak points. No action taken, suggestions under advisement.
Alamogordo, N M Oct 12 AP Elk freed on a Texas cattle range years ago have moved into New Mexico. Ranchers report a sizeable herd wintering south of Lincoln forest feeding mainly at night. The herd originated from a Texas rancher who released the elk south of the Guadalupe Mountains.

A large shipment of plant based butter from Arizona was condemned by federal authorities and libel charges filed in federal district court. The product was advertised as from the plant "of perpetual youth" and claimed to be legitimate, but the labeling was deemed misleading based on the see matter on packages.

Great Bend dispatch reports the First National Bank of Hoisington ten miles north of Great Bend was robbed of between 3000 and 4000 dollars by three masked men who fled in a sedan with a fourth man waiting. P Munns, president. M W Bennett, cashier. M V Johan, assistant cashier. and two sisters including George Snyder of Wichita, were involved or connected to the incident as details unfold.
