Axis allies urged to end war with Soviet Russia

Domei news agency reports a special article urging the Axis to terminate the war with Soviet Russia to conserve German manpower and equipment for a future full-scale assault on Britain. It warns that prolonging the war with Russia could leave Axis powers with scarce materials as “have nots.”

Dinner honoring Dempsey draws fast crowds at Nickson

Tickets for a dinner at Nickson Coffee Shop honoring Under secretary of the Interior John J. Dempsey are selling quickly. Capacity is about 90, with 75 cent tickets from the Chamber of Commerce. Lions Club gave the venue for a purely complimentary event to discuss flood information with city and county officials and Pecos Valley Artesian Conservancy District and Hagerman Canal representatives. Dempsey arrives tomorrow afternoon.

Health meeting on flood health problems tonight at 8

Representatives from the Red Cross city council county commissioners health department and nurses will discuss public health issues arising from the recent floods. Red Cross field worker Miss Wilkins will attend. The meeting is at the county health office at 8 p m.

Light Rain Here This Morning Across the Region

A light rain totaled seven hundredths of an inch from a southern moving storm. Reports from Roswell area indicate clearing weather westward, easing flood fears. Locations including Clovis and Hobbs saw clouds while Artesia and Riverside reported sun or fair conditions.

The Soviet army publication Red Star reports German forces driven wedges into central front defenses and rushing reserves for an all-out offensive toward Moscow. Heavy losses are claimed for the Germans in Bryansk and Vyazma as Red Army counterattacks press the invaders back.

Burglar Nabbed Mere's Given Life Sentence

Lester F. Grant was arrested Monday night by the sheriff's department and sentenced to life imprisonment by Judge James B. McGhee under New Mexico habitual criminal law. He pled guilty to stealing a medicine cabinet from Big Jo Lumber Co and to three prior felonies: grand larceny in Arkansas, burglary in Texas, and grand larceny in Texas. Grant was caught climbing the Big Jo fence. Francisco Torrez pled guilty to rape and was sentenced to 5 to 7 years in the penitentiary.

Hearing Set For Suit Against Roswell School Board

Judge James B. McGhee set October 27 as the hearing date in the case of Eva M. Bourne against the Roswell Board of Education. Bourne claims her school nurse contract was extended for 1941 42 under a new state law due to lack of written notice of dismissal before school ended. She seeks 1800 for the current year and a contract under the law. The board answered. Bourne replied.

Major Boellner Ordered to Philippine Islands Post

Major Arden Boellner has been ordered to the Philippine Islands and will depart October 18 for his new post. He arrived in Roswell yesterday to visit his family. He has been with the 25th Infantry at Fort Huachuca Arizona and has spent the last two months in army maneuvers in Louisiana.

License Tags Required for Bicycles in Roswell

Roswell voters approve an ordinance requiring bicycle licenses starting December 1 1941 with a 50 cent annual fee. The measure bans sidewalk riding in certain areas and allows license revocation for violations. The council also dedicated the meeting to Claude Hobbs with a memorial published elsewhere. Disaster Loan Officials Coming to Survey New Mexico Floods

An official of the disaster corporation said a representative would be sent to New Mexico tomorrow to survey flood conditions. The report would decide if a temporary office, possibly in Roswell, would be set up to handle flood relief applications. The representative’s name was withheld.

Roswell Tularosa Road Opened For Light Traffic

The Roswell to Tularosa stretch of Highway 70 between Hondo and Ruidoso Junction was opened late yesterday for passenger cars and light trucks while heavy trucks remain blocked. The road had been closed over a week due to a bridge washout and other washouts, according to the district highway office.

Cotton Ginning Begins In Roswell

R. T. Hoover, Inc announced the purchase of the first bales of cotton ginned at Roswell Gin Company and Farmers Inc gin. Fourteen bales have been ginned in Roswell to date.

City Council Passes Memorial To Claude Hobbs

Roswell city council dedicated its regular meeting to the memory of Claude Hobbs. The memorial notes his death at his Roswell home on September 28, 1941 and his status as a valued citizen and successful businessman. Two Conferences On Flood Control Held by Officials

Santa Fe New Mexico officials held talks on flood control for the Hondo Pecos and Gila valleys. Under-secretary John J Dempsey and Governor Miles planned a October 30 meeting with state and federal officials while Dempsey’s tour included Roswell Carlsbad Artesia Conchas Dam and a visit to the Gila valley. He urged prompt action to prevent future floods and conserve water and said he would discuss priorities for oil supply purchases and delays at Conchas Dam caused by CCC staffing.

Neutrality Act changes limited to arms shipment rule

Eighteen Men From Roswell to Enter Army Oct 15

Eighteen men will leave Roswell on October 15 for Santa Fe to be inducted under selective service. Fourteen are from Chaves County and four from other local centers. The largest order number among Oct 15 departures is 2116. A second call adds seven men for November 4. Names and order numbers include Jack Bernard Cooney 742 and William Howell Russ 1611 among others from Roswell Dexter Hagerman and nearby towns.

Bodies of Bomber Victims Recovered

FLAGSTAFF ARIZ OCT 8 Arrangements were made for disposition of six U S army air corps members killed when their plane struck Agassiz peak near here. First Lt Henry S Thomas flight surgeon from Albuquerque home base said Lt W W Crim of Pendleton will be sent to Henderson Texas and Pvt L T Morfeld of Springerville will go to Albuquerque for a funeral. The crash was investigated at the scene and ten miles from the wreck.
