Harrisburg Ark Oct 7 AP Herman Ledbetter 31 was sentenced to life imprisonment for whipping his 2 year old stepson to death. Convicted of first degree murder last night the defense said the child died from injuries from a wagon fall. The mother who is 18 did not attend the trial. Helen Phillips leaves for Santa Fe visit with Miss Mary Jane Robinson.
Martin J. Insull surrendered to provincial authorities in Barrie Ontario and spent the night in jail opening the way for extradition proceedings which may take several weeks to complete.
Miss Sophie Albertine arrived in Roswell on October 4, 1881 and Mrs John W Poe marked 51 years since her arrival on October 4, 1952. She witnessed Roswell grow from 25 people to a city of 12,000, watching Main Street evolve from prairie to trade center.
A large crowd from Portales Clovis and surrounding areas gathered in Roswell for the fair and the Roswell Clovis high school football game. Portales and Clovis bands performed with a parade and outdoor concert, while Clovis girls in school colors offered pep and support.
Santa Fe, Oct 7 AP J F Hinkle the state land commissioner announced funeral services for Pete Steffian former chief clerk in the land office would be held here Monday morning Steffian died in El Paso after several weeks illness Spanish American War veterans will render military honors at the grave and interment will follow at the National Army cemetery The body will be shipped from El Paso and arrive in Santa Fe tomorrow afternoon.
Treasury receives fourteen bids for a new Carlsbad New Mexico post office site. Bidders include Ella Fenton, Dowling Moody Company, J B Morris, W H Merchant, W A Moore, Felton W Courtney and J A Falke offering sums from 4 000 to 30 090 dollars for various lots and parcels at Stevens Main Fox Halagueno Green Canal and adjacent blocks.
The Princess Theatre was sold this morning under court order by receiver Charles Hardwick to Laura H Cahoon for six thousand dollars. No other bidders appeared. The sale occurred at ten o'clock at the courthouse with several interested attendees. The property will likely continue operating as before, with Hardwick remaining manager. Upcoming films include Harold Lloyd in Movie Crazy, Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald in Love Me Tonight, The Four Marx Brothers in Horsefeathers, Walter Huston in American Madness, Dolores Del Rio in Bird of Paradise, with contracts for Paramount, Warner Brothers, First National, Vitaphone, and Columbia Pictures.

Santa Fe Oct 7 Warren R Graham state treasurer said the state saved 11160 in interest by an arrangement with Denver Land Syndicate for the sale of one million dollars in highway debentures in 250000 blocks for the first six months due Oct 1. About 372000 of the debentures remained unsold then and coupons were clipped and cancelled.
Albuquerque N M Oct 7 Two hitch hikers from Los Angeles Paul Hrepich and Steve Kanizczech were seriously injured in a car accident near Bernalillo last night and were reported recovering in an Albuquerque hospital. Hrepich suffered a broken left leg and cuts while Kanizczech had cuts and other injuries.
Former New Mexico governor R C Dillon a Republican candidate traveled from Encine to attend Old Timers Day at the Fair. He is himself an Old Timer and was seen mingling with attendees and talking with locals.
W J McInnes chairman sets Salvation Army drive for Wednesday October 12 using the same organization as last year. The soliciting committee will meet for breakfast at Nickson Coffee Shop at 7 30 a m and begin work immediately after.
A called meeting of the Women's Republican Club is set for Tuesday at 3 PM at the Chamber of Commerce. Officers will be elected and other business transacted. All interested women urged to attend. President Mrs. Frarryandres.
John P. O'Brien emerged from Tammany Hall to win the Democratic nomination for New York mayor at a Madison House Garden convention. James J. Walker's resignation leaves a November 8 election for the remainder of his term. Edward J. Flynn and others backed O'Brien, shifting influence from Bronx acting Mayor Joseph McKee.
Santa Fe October 7 The state highway commission opened bids on one state project and two federal aid jobs. Bondurant and Bogle of Santa Fe bid 5252 644.92 for eight miles of U S 60 70 near Clovis Texico using corrugated metal culverts and 5253 139.44 for minor work. Armstrong and Armstrong of Roswell bid 5115 432 789 for 37 miles of grading and minor concrete work from eight miles northwest of Deming to the Grant Luna county line near Faywood. Engineers will finish checking bids on 19 miles of grading on U S 85 Hot Springs Caballo. Other oiling projects in Lincoln Roosevelt and Curry counties await late bid openings. Weather-day scheduling was allowed to replace rigid deadlines.
Coach Vaughn Corley and 20 Las Cruces High players traveled to Phoenix to face the Phoenix High Indians.
