Local motorists face higher pump prices as most Roswell service stations increase from one to several cents per gallon across grades. Roswell residents Rosendo Casarez and James Wagner Jr. were fined a total of $15,000 and ordered to deduct 519.16 acre feet from their water rights in a Roswell Basin case. District Judge Joe Angel noted these are the first known meter tampering penalties in the state’s water rights suits. The violations involved a metal conduit and a hose wrapped around meters, with the State Engineer’s Office pursuing heavy penalties to protect meter accuracy and allocation.
Two 71 year old women, Margaret Demuth and Marjorie Jinings, remain hospitalized after a pickup struck them at Second and Main in Eastern New Mexico. Esther Helmstettler, 40, the driver, passed out at the wheel and hit the pedestrians, a vehicle, and a sheriff car at about 10 15 a m. Demuth is in poor condition and Jinings in satisfactory condition. Helmstettler was treated and released. No citations have been issued.
