Twenty to twenty five Distributive Education students from Dexter and Hagerman will poll residents at Broadmoor Shopping Center. Participants fill a questionnaire on home address shopping preferences and ad influence with prizes $15 $10 and $9. Later, 56 Dexter Hagerman students will compile survey results.
The New Mexico Highway Commission will not hold the November bid opening for highway projects. Projects on the November list will be rescheduled to the December 22 bid opening due to right of way problems. The move affects planned state road work across the region.
President Johnson, McNamara and World Bank officials issued three statements amid speculation about his move. McNamara will become World Bank president after finishing fiscal 1969 defense work, with a successor to be named. The White House and McNamara praised his service while offering little on Vietnam policy shifts.
Senator McCarthy announces bid for 1968 Democratic nomination focusing on Vietnam opposition. He will run in Wisconsin Nebraska Oregon and California with possible entries in New Hampshire and Massachusetts and says Kennedy could inherit his support. He criticizes Johnson administration escalation and calls for an honorable political settlement.
Miss Wool of America Miss Alanna Crimmins of Barkesville Oklahoma will visit Roswell December 9 as part of the second annual Wool Bowl events. The 18 year old honors student at Oklahoma State University will bring 23 suitcases with over 40 outfits showcasing 1967 fall wool fashions and will crown the Wool Bowl queen during halftime. She will also appear in the Miss Wool of New Mexico pageant December 8 at Pearson Auditorium modeling Wool Orbiting Looks. This visit marks her first to Roswell after competing in the National Miss Wool of America Pageant in San Angelo Texas.
Secretary Robert Weaver urged organized labor to invest one billion dollars of pension funds into slum housing, citing safer, high return programs. AFL CIO leaders backed programs to train Negro youths for rebuilding work, with unions promising full cooperation in city reconstruction efforts amid recent model cities grants.
US envoy Cyrus Vance returned from Cyprus to Athens amid reports of a Greek Turkish agreement to avert war over Cyprus. NATO Secretary General Brosio said substantial understanding had been reached and danger of conflict was over. Jose Roiz Bennet of the UN also left for New York after talks.
The Christmas tale Santa and the Pigwidgen by Lucrece Beale starts today in the Roswell Daily Record and runs daily through Christmas. Illustrated by Dick Hodgins Jr. the story follows Patrick Tweedleknees an elf with courage an evil witch a sleeping giant and Santa as the Pigwidgen causes global dream sleep. A mysterious black purse entangles Mr Claus on Page 12.
Fairmont Foods of Los Angeles and Omaha will warehouse foodstuffs at Roswell Industrial Air Center. The 12 000 square foot Building 112 lease enables rail inbound and truck outbound distribution to all New Mexico and parts of Colorado. Five jobs created. Phil DeCato of Lubbock to lead the operation. Remodeling starts next week after lease signing with the city.
Sierra Blanca Ski Area plans to open this Saturday with the Baby T Bar and Lincoln T Bar in operation. A spokesman said conditions will be reported as poor to fair unless more snow falls before the weekend. Snow showers have occurred recently, totaling about ten inches after Monday and Wednesday snows with some melt on Tuesday.
A 6.5 magnitude quake centered near Debar in western Macedonia caused landslides and disrupted roads hindering rescue. Eight killed and about forty injured as army teams reach Debar with aid. Corfu and northern Greece felt the tremor.
