Reports from the front claim heavy casualties in fighting related to Romanian outbreaks. Air raids on London caused significant damage and numerous casualties. Greeks claim continued gains against Italians as Italian forces are reported cut off.
Mexico City November 30 Major Guillermo Garcia Gallegos killed during raid on Communist offices to probe rumors of a plot against president-elect Manuel Avila Camacho who is to be inaugurated tomorrow. Police seized rifles pistols a bomb and cartridges. 55 detainees including Ester Chapa were arrested.
A diplomatic dispatch from Bucharest reports that all thirty Iron Guardists who took part in the Jilava prison killings of 64 regime officials are said to have died by their own hand. Concurrently, a note says revolution erupted in Bessarabia after Romania ceded the territory to Soviet Russia, with widespread deaths and injuries.
FBI researchers study Britain's wartime espionage and sabotage measures to strengthen peacetime defense against foreign agents in the United States. A two man mission to England gathered first hand methods and will report after returning early next year for use in the National Police Academy and related retraining courses.
Funeral services for Clemen N. Butler a Roswell resident since 1924 after an extended illness were held this morning at 10 30 o clock at the Talmage Memorial Chapel Rev W C Garrett of the Baptist Church officiated with music by the First Baptist Church choir Interment followed at South Park Butler came from Iowa and lived in Roswell about eighteen years He is survived by two sons one daughter and two grandchildren.
At least 28 miners are believed dead with as many as 32 missing after a huge explosion at the Ohio and Pennsylvania Coal Company's mine near Cadiz. Rescue teams faced treacherous rock falls and gas as they cleared debris two miles from an exit shaft. Thirty-one other workers escaped, while five were initially found unconscious but revived.
Thai forces report occupation of Banongkien Ban kokekrabang and Pratachai in French Indo China. Reprisals alleged against Thakhek and Savannakhet with Thai air force bombing. Roswell Girl Scout Scribe Club members toured The Record plant with Miss Vera Smith. The visitors included Dorothy Cole Troop 1 Janelle Young Troop 2 and Jere Clayton Troop 3. The Scribe Club meets each Saturday morning.
Navy crushed Army 14 to 0 in a football clash at Municipal Stadium Philadelphia before 102000. Navy dominated with powerful backs and two 95 yard drives, Busik scoring the first quarter TD and Leonard adding the extra point as Navy led throughout.
County treasurer Will Robinson and staff handled a large rush of taxpayers paying the first half of 1940 taxes before delinquency. The rush began early and continued through the day, with Saturday closing ignored to clear all payments before the deadline, after which interest accrues on the first half.
November saw a slump in building activity here with permits totaling 8900 dollars. This brings the eleven month total to 374,917 dollars excluding Roswell school and NMMS building programs which had no permits. November permits included two new houses.

J C Barnett announced that five students in the Civil Aeronautics Bureau program under Roswell Chamber of Commerce have all soloed. The group includes Mary Elizabeth Russell Olan Wooldridge Howard Guss Harry Burkstaller and Oscar Allison. They earned flight scholarships for top ground school grades and each receive 35 hours of instruction. Two are in the final stage of the course with others near completion.
Fire rekindled last night in cotton linters owned by the Cotton Oil Company, stored in a yard opposite the East 2nd street oil plant. Firemen were summoned and kept watch overnight and today. The cotton is of little value, having burned once before this fall.
Old Santa visited Roswell with a huge turnout of children from southeastern New Mexico. A 57 hundred boxes of candy were passed to youngsters as 2,000 kids filled Yucca and Pecos theatres for the free morning show. The event runs each Saturday until Christmas, sponsored by the Advertising Club with local merchants, theatres aiding the program.
ALBUQUERQUE N M Nov 30 New Mexico took a 6 0 lead over Texas Tech in the opening minutes as Avery Monfort lateralled to Jack Morrissey who scored from the eight. Morrissey added the TD after the earlier key plays but missed the extra point. Fordham defeated NYU 26 0 in Yankee Stadium.
Melvin Pendleton sent a $75.87 check to the Salt Lake county treasurer for taxes. He included a note praising living in the United States and thanking the Lord that he is not paying taxes in Europe.
London reports from a Reuters correspondent aboard a British cruiser detailing a battle with Italian warships near Sardinia. The scene included two battleships seven cruisers and twelve destroyers in the line up with Ark Royal aircraft guiding first sightings. The Renown and a battle ship led the line as shells flew across the 20 000 yard gap and the fleet opened fire.
Red Cross roll call in Chaves County totals 2118.13 with 1886 one-dollar memberships and 232.13 in contributions. Exceeding the $2000 goal by 118, volunteers praise public response as W. C. Lawrence, rail chairman, notes the milestone.
J A McLaurin of Roswell who returned home from Ex celsior Springs Mo tells a remarkable tale of reuniting with old friend J T Cameron whom he last saw in 1927 1928 while working on a lettuce ranch near Phoenix Arizona The two men who had not seen each other for 12 years were placed in the same ward at McCleary Sanitarium and Hospital Cameron living in Canon City Colo and both had undergone similar operations within 50 minutes of each other and had traveled about 700 miles to reach the sanitarium arriving on the same day together
Warren Cobean of Cobean Stationery Shop ran a Records classified ad seeking a clerk and received a flood of applicants. He noted he did not count them but said fifty to seventy five people were in need of fine intelligent boys for clerks and he could supply them.
Mr. Cobean has tested the value of classified many times and expresses quiet satisfaction that it happens again, noting the familiarity and ease of success in repeating the pleasant experience.
